Elche and Getafe meet in the first game on the final day of the season in the Spanish top flight. The fact that it’s kicking off at a different time to every other match is indicative of the fact that there is nothing major at stake here. However with both sides currently on 39 points, the outcome will determine who finishes higher.

Both sides can be content with their efforts this season and there’s a certain symmetry to their campaigns with both enjoying better fortunes after changing coaches early on. Francisco was appointed in November on a deal until the end of the season and has comfortably guided Elche to safety. Key to that has been their home results against fellow bottom half teams. Indeed they’ve only lost one game at the Martinez Valero against a side currently outside of the top six.

That’s an impressive record but they have shown a significant decline in recent weeks having made it to a safe points tally. They come into this following three straight defeats to nil. It looked for all the world at that stage that they would be heading towards the Segunda Division but in the end they have beaten the drop and with a bit of breathing space with survival secured after a dour 0-0 draw against Barcelona last weekend.

What Sanchez Flores has done has involved reestablishing some of those solid defensive foundations that were so evident during the Jose Bordalas era. The system is different with Getafe playing with three centre-backs and three central midfielders which has helped them sure up in central areas and of course it has helped a lot that Enes Unal has had the season of his career so far up top with 15 goals.
