Barcelona vs Villarreal Preview

Barcelona and Villarreal’s seasons come to an end with the teams clashing at Camp Nou on Sunday. It has been a rollercoaster of a campaign for both teams in different ways, but for this match, there’ll be one common goal in mind; end the season on a high. Villarreal are the team with more at stake as they aren’t yet confirmed to be playing European football next season.

A 0-0 stalemate away to Getafe saw Barça secure second place last weekend. From the position they were in prior to Xavi’s takeover, this is definitely progress and a step in the right direction for next season. This match allowed Xavi to rotate his lineup slightly and give some fringe players the opportunity to get some minutes under their belts. There were half chances for both teams but ultimately, xGs of 0.24 and 0.20 represented the scoreline.

With the final game of the season being on home soil, the desire to send the fans off on a good note will be on the staff and players’ minds. Ansu Fati may start on the left flank and Alejandro Baldé might regain his place after an impactful performance on Sunday. Xavi spoke highly of the youngster in his post match press conference, saying, “Alejandro Baldé was great today. He was good in attack and showed his character.” Barca are going to play for their fans and try to give them more reasons to forget about the fundamentally disappointing season this has been and look forward to a promising and improved season next time around.

A 43rd minute Francis Coquelin dagger was cancelled out by two second half Real Sociedad goals to hand the Yellow Submarine their most recent defeat. They had chances to increase their lead but failed to convert them and subsequently paid the price. Villarreal may have to win this to secure UEFA Conference League football as the last Europa League place was taken up by Real Sociedad after that victory at the Ceramica.

After astoundingly reaching the Champions League semi-finals, knocking out European giants Juventus and Bayern Munich on the way, Villarreal won’t be satisfied with Conference League football next season. Of course reaching the semi-finals of the UCL is a massive overachievement for a club of their size, but the difference in quality, expectations and resources when playing in the Conference League is significant. Nevertheless, European football is still the bare minimum for Unai Emery and his team so they’ll be eager to collect all three points on enemy territory.

Barcelona vs Villarreal Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 3-2 Villarreal

Despite Villarreal’s search for three points to confirm European football for next season, a packed Camp Nou, the fans’ enthusiasm to see their team for the final time this season and Ansu Fati’s return will play a big role in the atmosphere in the stadium and the players’ response to it. It could be a tactically and emotionally exciting game with lots of goals.
