The penultimate weekend in LaLiga 2021/22 saw nine games kick off simultaneously on Sunday and we had twists and turns right until to the very final minute with Mallorca scoring a 92nd minute goal to totally transform the picture at the bottom. Sevilla also clinched Champions League qualification late in their game at the Wanda Metropolitano while Alaves were relegated following a 3-1 loss at Levante. Read on for our LaLiga matchday 37 review featuring all the results, xG data, stats and team of the week.

There was real drama at the bottom of the table throughout Sunday’s action as Cadiz put in a really strong performance against what admittedly wasn’t anything like Real Madrid’s strongest XI. While Mariano did put the visitors in front early on, Cadiz largely bossed the game, having a matchday high 21 shots against the champions but they could only manage one goal, despite posting 2.67 xG, in part as a result of a missed penalty with Andriy Lunin saving Alvaro Negredo’s effort.
As a result of those misses, Cadiz no longer have control of their own destiny and could be relegated even if they win at Alaves next weekend. That’s because Mallorca did make the most of their limited opportunities against Rayo with Abdon Prats netting a dramatic Stoppage Time winner for the Balearic side.
Elsewhere there were some really curious stats from the Getafe-Barcelona game. The visitors set matchday highs for possession and pass completion rates but matchday lows for both shots and xG with Xavi’s side putting in a slow and sluggish display against Getafe who are now safe as a result of the draw.
|Most Shots||IAGO ASPAS (Celta Vigo) – 9|
|Most Completed Passes||OSCAR MINGUEZA (Barcelona) – 148|
|Most Key Passes||NABIL FEKIR (Real Betis) – 6|
|Most Completed Dribbles||FRANCIS COQUELIN (Villarreal) – 6|
|Most Aerials Won||JOSELU (Alaves) – 6|
|Most Successful Tackles||REINILDO (Atletico Madrid) – 6|
|Most Interceptions||KEVIN VAZQUEZ (Celta Vigo) – 6|
Standout individual numbers this weekend included Iago Aspas having 9 of Celta Vigo’s 14 shots in their 1-0 win over Elche. He wasn’t the goalscorer though, although Aspas did provide the assist for Denis Suarez’s goal in a game which essentially had nothing riding on it.
Nabil Fekir was on song once more for Betis, producing 6 key passes as his side beat Granada 2-0. For a long while it looked as though Manuel Pellegrini’s side were going to take the battle for 4th to the final weekend but Youssef En-Nesyri’s late goal for Sevilla put pay to that.
Oscar Mingueza completed a ridiculous 148 passes for Barcelona against Getafe whose highest individual figure was Mauro Arambarri’s 33. Mingueza’s central defensive partner Clement Lenglet wasn’t far behind on 134 but in terms of key passes, the Catalans completed just 4 in the whole game from a total of 799 completed passes, the same number as Arambarri managed for the hosts.
Sorare LaLiga Fantasy Team of the Week
It wasn’t a weekend where any one team truly dominated matches and relegated Levante were the only side to score more than twice. We did get three players from Real Betis with Juanmi moving onto 16 goals for the season with a brace to see off Granada who remain in trouble going into the final weekend.
The best individual scores came in midfield and there were three familiar names in the shape of Iker Muniain, Toni Kroos and Dani Parejo. The trio have been among the best LaLiga midfielders once more this season and all put in strong displays on Sunday, although Muniain was the only winner with his Athletic side now in with a chance of European qualification heading into the final weekend.
Sorare Player of the Week: Denis Suarez (91)
The player of the week was Celta Vigo’s Deni Suarez who scored the only goal and put in a strong all-round showing in his team’s win over Elche.
