The midweek action saw one or two issues resolved as Atletico Madrid clinched Champions League qualification while Levante’s relegation was confirmed. There were lots of goals and several very one-sided games too as we move towards the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign. Read on for our LaLiga matchday 36 review featuring all the results, xG data, stats and team of the week.

The xG data in LaLiga this week suggests that some of the one-sided scorelines we got were something of a freak occurrence. While Real Madrid and Real Sociedad were pretty dominant, Villarreal only out-performed Rayo by 1.03 xG in their 5-1 win while Betis had an even lower xG advantage than that in their 3-0 success at Mestalla. There was major frustration for Sevilla though who created 1.65 xG without scoring and Betis’ win meant they have to wait to book their place in next season’s UCL.
In terms of the shot count, the most one-sided match was actually Alaves’ 2-1 win over Espanyol. The Vitoria side had 27 attempts on goal to their opponent’s 5 as they clung onto their top flight status for a few more days at least. They’ll be hoping to take it to the final day when they host relegation rivals Cadiz in what could be a massive game.
Individual Stats

Perhaps the most striking thing in the individual stats this week is Papu Gomez and his nine key passes against Mallorca. He has been influential for Sevilla this season but has often been let down by the poor finishing of his teammates and that was certainly the case on Wednesday as struggling Mallorca hung on for a precious point at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Marcos Acuna completed the most passes this matchday in LaLiga in that game with one more than Frenkie de Jong for Barcelona against Celta.
On the defensive front, Lucas Torro was effective at cutting out Getafe’s long balls for Osasuna with 10 aerial challenges won. There were no outright leaders in the successful tackles or interceptions categories but it was interesting to note that Eduardo Camavinga produced another solid game in the holding role for Real Madrid, winning a joint matchday high of 6 tackles.
