Mallorca vs Rayo Vallecano Preview
Mallorca are back in action this weekend and it’s an absolutely vital game for their hopes of staying in the Primera. Anything less than a win could see them relegated on Sunday night but they will be firm favourites against a Rayo Vallecano side that has nothing left to play for.
Victory would guarantee that Mallorca take their fight for survival to matchday 38 when they travel to El Sadar to play Osasuna. That will be the only objective for Javier Aguirre and his side here but they will need to play better than they did in their last home game – a dreadful 6-2 defeat against fellow strugglers Granada.
To their credit, they regrouped and responded well at Sevilla in midweek. Aguirre made some big calls including dropping keeper Sergio Rico in favour of veteran Manolo Reina. The 37 year old, who was shaky earlier in the season, came up with a stunning save in Stoppage Time to ensure Mallorca earned a 0-0 draw and with it a potentially useful point in their battle for survival. That should go some way to restoring confidence levels and they’d dearly love an early goal to settle some nerves here.
In theory this is about as good a fixture as Mallorca could wish for at this stage of the season. Rayo haven’t been great on their travels all season and are now mathematically safe. That was also the case going into their Thursday night home game against Villarreal when they were ripped apart in a 5-1 defeat.
Their hopes here ain’t aided by the absence of some key men. Oscar Trejo is injured while Santi Comesaña is suspended and you do feel as though there is a significant drop-off in their levels whenever Rayo aren’t quite at full strength. Adding a bit more depth may be a priority this summer for the Madrid club who will still start next season as one of the relegation favourites. Keeping Andoni Iraola will be key but that may be dependent on what happens at other clubs with a few vacant Primera positions likely to crop up in the coming weeks.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Rayo Wins, 2 Mallorca Wins.
- The sides have met twice already this season, both in Madrid and both won by Rayo.
- Mallorca have won 3 of the last 5 at Son Moix though.
- The last meeting here was in the Segunda last season with Rayo winning 1-0.

Mallorca vs Rayo Vallecano Predictions
Score Prediction: Mallorca 3-0 Rayo Vallecano
This is the classic end of season situation where one team is fighting hard against relegation and the other has nothing to play for and is looking forward to their summer break. Mallorca’s heavy loss last weekend could have been a killer blow but they showed genuine character to bounce back and take a point with a clean sheet at the Sanchez-Pizjuan and they should back that up with a win here.
