Getafe vs Barcelona Preview

Getafe match action

Barcelona travel to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez this weekend for a game against a Getafe side that is still not mathematically safe. While a lot of results elsewhere need to go against Quique Sanchez Flores’ side for them to be in any danger, they’d dearly love to take care of business themselves here.

They’ve seemed content in recent games to keep adding points to their tally without taking too many risks. It’s 3 straight draws for them heading into this one, the most recent of which came in a fairly uneventful 1-1 draw at Osasuna in midweek. Getafe didn’t have a single shot on target in that game but levelled things up thanks to an own goal from the home team’s Lucas Torro.

Getafe don’t have many reasons to fear this fixture. They’ve been excellent at home aside from the opening few weeks of the season and come into this game having lost just 1 of their last 13 in LaLiga at the Coliseum. Real Madrid are among the sides they’ve beaten at home during that run so they should take confidence into this and even if they were to lose it, there’s still a decent chance they will be celebrating survival come Full-Time.

Barcelona meanwhile would clinch 2nd place with a victory. While that’s never really good enough for the Catalan giants, if ever there was a year to make that an exception, it’s probably this one. They were loitering in mid-table and looking in real danger of missing out on Champions League qualification when Xavi took over, so it has been an impressive turnaround overall.

The question of whether Barcelona are going to be good enough to kick on and seriously challenge for the title next season is still unclear though. Their league revival has been strong but disappointing European and Copa del Rey exits can’t be totally ignored either. Plans for the summer are already underway it would seem with reports this week suggesting Frenkie de Jong is on the brink of a move to Manchester United, something which will anger some Barça fans but may be necessary with the club still needing to free up some funds if they are going to be able to bring in any real quality themselves.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Getafe Win, 5 Barcelona Wins.
  • Getafe won this fixture 1-0 last season.
  • However they’ve lost twice at Camp Nou since then, including a 2-1 loss earlier this term.
  • Barcelona have won on 4 of their last 5 trips to the Coliseum overall.

Getafe vs Barcelona Predictions

Score Prediction: Getafe 1-1 Barcelona

Barcelona’s recent away form in LaLiga has been really impressive but this is a tough place to go and Getafe will provide the kind of physical test that the visitors will need to be ready for. If the visitors don’t come with the right kind of mentality, they could get rolled over here with Getafe sure to be very motivated as they bid to clinch survival. However the hosts would certainly take a point and are unlikely to take any major risks themselves should this be level heading into the closing stages.
