Celta Vigo and Elche meet in one of the few games this weekend in LaLiga with nothing really riding on it. While they could potentially end up scrapping it out for positions, both sides are safe heading into this one.

It’s fair to say that Celta had loftier ambitions for this term. Much was going to depend on whether a 34 year old Iago Aspas could continue to produce his best football but he has largely done that, at least from a goalscoring perspective with 18 in LaLiga this term, 4 better than his tally in each of the previous 2 seasons. Given that, it’s hard to understand quite why Celta haven’t managed to at least push for the final European places.

There may be an element of teams cottoning on to Chacho Coudet’s tactics and distinctive 4-1-3-2 system. Defensively they have actually been better this term with only 41 conceded compared to 57 in 2020/21 but the lack of a goal threat besides Aspas has cost them. An ageing Nolito has declined while new signings such as Franco Cervi and Thiago Galhardo have struggled for any kind of consistency. More attacking options are needed this summer, particularly given Santi Mina’s recent conviction.

As for Elche, they had a strange evening on Wednesday with their survival guaranteed at Half-Time in their game against Atletico Madrid as a result of events elsewhere. They went on to lose that match 2-0 but there were still celebrations at Full Time at the Manuel Martinez Valero. For the second season running, Elche have defied many pre-season expectations to beat the drop and they’ve done so much more comfortably this time around with two games to spare.

For the first time since the 1970’s, their stay in the Primera heads into a third year and they can do so with plenty of optimism. Francisco has done an excellent job since taking over and there are plenty of Elche players who can be proud of their efforts this campaign. Pere Milla and the impressive Lucas Boye have been their chief goal threats while Edgar Badia has had a good season in goal.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Elche Wins, 2 Celta Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Elche were 1-0 victors when the sides met earlier this season.
  • Celta were unbeaten in 4 games against Elche prior to that.
  • However Elche have avoided defeat on 4 of their last 5 trips to Balaidos.

Celta Vigo vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Celta 3-0 Elche

While Elche only mathematically secured safety in midweek, even last weekend they had the feel of a team that knew they’d already achieved their goals for the season in a 3-0 defeat at Cadiz. A repeat performance could well produce a similar kind of result here and Celta look well capable of winning this one.
