Sevilla vs Mallorca Preview
Sevilla entertain Mallorca this Wednesday in what is a significant night for both teams. Sevilla can clinch Champions League qualification while the visitors are in desperate need of a surprise result in their battle for survival.
This may be the night that Sevilla can celebrate a third straight top four finish under Julen Lopetegui. Not since the 1950’s has the club achieved that feat in the top flight so it would be a pretty impressive achievement and one that Lopetegui and his players could be rightly proud of, not least given this was a virtually brand new squad that was put together after a busy summer of recruitment in 2019. Yet strangely, it feels as though there won’t be too much of a celebratory mood at the Sanchez-Pizjuan, even if they do seal UCL qualification on Wednesday night.
There is a sense that this season has badly tailed off with just 4 wins from their last 14 matches in all competitions. A disappointing European campaign and a cup loss to rivals Betis adds to the overall sense of disappointment. Legendary Sporting Director Monchi will already be plotting what may well be their biggest summer squad overhaul since three years ago, with plenty of comings and goings expected.
Right now, it’s impossible for Mallorca to make any summer plans, as it’s very unclear as to which division they’ll be playing in. It has been a rollercoaster ride for fans of the Balearic Island team in recent years and indeed in recent weeks. Wins over Atletico Madrid and Alaves had raised hopes of survival but a woeful 6-2 loss at home to fellow strugglers Granada at the weekend has plunged them into deep trouble.
This is the toughest of Mallorca’s remaining fixtures with their weekend home game against Rayo Vallecano simply a “must win” but they’ll feel much more positive about their chances there if they can pick up a result at the Sanchez-Pizjuan. However the odds of that appear quite slim given it’s 10 defeats from 12 league games for Mallorca overall heading into this.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Sevilla Wins, 2 Mallorca Wins, 1 Draw.
- The sides drew 1-1 in Palma de Mallorca earlier this term.
- Sevilla have won 4 of the last 6 meetings at the Sanchez-Pizjuan.
- Mallorca did win 2-1 here in 2010 and 2013 though.

Sevilla vs Mallorca Predictions
Score Prediction: Sevilla 3-1 Mallorca
Mallorca’s defensive problems have continued despite the appointment of Javier Aguirre and you fear for them in truth following such a heavy defeat in such a key game at the weekend. Sevilla may not have been setting the world on fire of late, but they have offered more of a goal threat in recent games and should get the win here to book themselves a place in next season’s Champions League.
