Elche vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Atletico Madrid travel to Elche this week looking to book their place in next season’s Champions League. Fears that they might miss out have eased in recent weeks but they still have work to do heading into this game to be sure of their continued place at Europe’s top table.
For Elche, the mission on Wednesday is to mathematically seal survival. With Mallorca kicking off an hour earlier, they could be in the strange position of having something to really celebrate at Half-Time here. Elche will be safe if Mallorca lose at Sevilla but Francisco and his team would love to take care of business on their own by pulling off an upset in this game.
Francisco has been one of the standout coaches in Spain this term having done an excellent job at the Manuel Martinez Valero having taken over a team in deep relegation trouble in the autumn. Wins over Mallorca and Betis in April all but clinched survival but he wouldn’t have been at all pleased with his team’s display in a 3-0 loss at Cadiz at the weekend where the visitors only created 0.06 xG, one of the worst figures we’ve seen all season in LaLiga.
If they play like that again, Atleti will surely take care of business here, although Diego Simeone’s side haven’t exactly been massively convincing of late. April defeats in Bilbao and Palma de Mallorca raised doubts about their ability to even seal a top four finish but neither Real Betis nor Real Sociedad has really managed to put them under any kind of sustained pressure.
There was a rare taste of home Madrid derby joy at the weekend for Atleti. For just the second time in the 21st Century, they defeated Real Madrid in LaLiga in front of their own fans, although they did benefit from Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to rest some key players. To some extent, Diego Simeone will be happy just to clinch UCL qualification and get this season over with given it hasn’t come close to living up to the highs of last term despite some significant additions last summer.

Elche vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Elche 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Elche didn’t play like a team that sensed they were still in any real relegation trouble at the weekend and they were well beaten by Cadiz in the end. Francisco will want some kind of response here but the edge may be taken out of it if news of a Mallorca defeat in Seville starts to filter through and Atleti may just have enough to claim the win.
