It’s crunch-time for Alaves who are propping up LaLiga coming into matchday 36. While a draw would in theory give them a mathematical chance, Alaves can’t really afford anything less than 3 points here if they are to retain any serious chance of avoiding relegation.

Having flirted with the drop in recent years, it’s no surprise to see Alaves struggling once again. While they do have a knack for pulling off late, great escapes, it already feels like they’ve left themselves too much to do this time around. Their overall form is poor too with 6 defeats in their last 8 league games meaning they require a minor miracle now in order to beat the drop.

The good news for Alaves is that they have won their last two home games, seeing off both Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal at Mendizorrotza. The fact they have two fellow strugglers to play after this game also gives them a glimmer of hope. However there was nothing positive about their weekend performance, where they collapsed to a tame 4-0 defeat in Vigo leaving recently appointed boss Julio Velazquez with plenty of soul searching to do.

This is a pretty good fixture for Alaves to have at this stage in the season though. Espanyol are in mid-table and don’t have anything to play for meaning Vicente Moreno may use this game to experiment and give one or two youngsters a chance. One of those may be Nico Melamed who came off the bench to score a brilliant equaliser against Osasuna at the weekend. The 21 year old has shown flashes of quality when he has been involved this term and will be hoping to be a bigger part of his coach’s plans next time around.

One of the interesting subplots to this fixture is Joselu, a striker who has carried Alaves at times this season and is comfortably their top scorer with 13 goals. He is reported to have already agreed a deal to join Espanyol this summer when his contract expires and may be lining up against future teammates here. If those reports are proved true, the big question for Espanyol fans will be whether he is coming to replace Raul De Tomas or play alongside him.

Alaves vs Espanyol Predictions

Score Prediction: Alaves 1-0 Espanyol

Alaves haven’t convinced under any of their three coaches this season, but they have won their last two home games under Velazquez and should be boosted by the noise of their fans here in a must win game. With Espanyol not great travellers and winding down towards the end of their season, a home win looks the most likely outcome which would see Alaves retain a glimmer of hope.
