Valencia vs Real Betis Preview

Tuesday night sees a rerun of the Copa del Rey Final as Valencia and Real Betis meet at Mestalla following last month’s showpiece in Seville. Betis won that clash on penalties and will be hoping for more joy over Los Che here.
Valencia could really have done with the cash boost that European football would have brought but now have another uncertain summer ahead. They may seek to move on big earners such as Jasper Cillessen and Maxi Gomez but that’s often easier said than done. There have been some positives this season under Jose Bordalas with the cup run the obvious highlight but there has been an “end of season” feel about their recent league games.
They offered almost no attacking threat whatsoever at San Mames at the weekend, creating just 0.13 xG in a goalless draw as goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili once again performed brilliantly at the other end to help Valencia secure a point. It was the third league game in a row where Bordalas’ side only managed to have one shot on target in the whole 90 minutes and that lack of a goal threat is becoming an increasing concern.
Real Betis meanwhile come into this game following a weekend setback in the form of a 2-1 home defeat against Barcelona. With Atletico winning the Madrid derby, their Champions League qualification hopes now look very slim and they have 6 points to make up on Diego Simeone’s 4th placed side with only 3 games to play. Victory here feels like a must if they are to retain any serious chance.
They can take confidence from what happened in the cup Final. While Betis did need penalties to win the trophy, they were the better side during the game and could have easily wrapped things up in the 90 minutes. Manuel Pellegrini does have his own goalscoring concerns to worry about though of late with Marc Bartra’s weekend strike against his former club, the only goal in their last 4 league games.

Valencia vs Real Betis Predictions
Score Prediction: Valencia 0-1 Betis
Betis have won 14 away matches this season in all competitions which is a very impressive return indeed. With both sides struggling for goals right now, it’s unlikely to be too open but Valencia look like a team in need of their summer breaks and with Gabriel Paulista and Jose Gaya missing at the back for the hosts, Betis will fancy they can force a breakthrough and win the game.
