Villarreal vs Sevilla Preview

Villarreal match action

One of the standout games this weekend comes from the Ceramica where Villarreal and Sevilla meet. Both clubs are battling for European places, although they aren’t direct rivals with the visitors currently 12 points better off then their opponents.

The Conference League looks like the most likely destination for Villarreal and they may have to fight hard with Athletic Club just to reach that. While that competition has largely been viewed as a success in its first staging, it will still feel like a significant step down for the Yellow Submarine and their fans following the emotion and excitement of this season’s wonderful Champions League run which ended at the Semi-Final stage this week against Liverpool.

Villarreal briefly threatened to stage an epic comeback as they raced into a 2-0 lead on the night to level the tie on aggregate. However a series of errors from goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli after the break contributed to Liverpool scoring 3 times to seal progress into the Final. It will be tough for Unai Emery to lift morale and get his team geared up for this game so soon after that match and his plans for the remainder of the league campaign weren’t aided by the decision to risk Gerard Moreno in midweek with the forward clearly still suffering from the effects of a hamstring injury sustained in the win at Getafe.

Sevilla have had no European distractions for some time since their Europa League elimination at the hands of West Ham. A Final between the unfancied duo of Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt in their own stadium will only compound the sense that they’ve missed a good chance to add to their already impressive Europa League haul, but their season should still end with the considerable consolidation prize of a top four finish in LaLiga and another crack at the Champions League in 2022/23.

They have a bit of work to do in order to make sure of that. Sevilla hold a 6 point advantage on city rivals Betis in 5th heading into this weekend, although that may have been slashed by the time this one kicks off depending on the result of the Saturday night game at the Benito Villamarin. It is just 2 wins from 8 league games for Sevilla heading into this and there is a sense that they are limping towards the finish-line but they certainly ought to get there still without surrendering a top four position.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Villarreal Wins, 2 Sevilla Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Sevilla won the reverse fixture 1-0 in December.
  • However they’ve only won on 1 of their last 6 trips to this ground.
  • They were beaten 4-0 here late on last season.

Villarreal vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 1-2 Sevilla

Villarreal have had 5 days to regroup and recover following their Champions League game against Liverpool, but fatigue could still be a factor given the effort they put in over two legs against the English side. They will be missing Gerard Moreno again and Sevilla should be the fresher team overall. The visitors ought to be at or very close to full strength too which has rarely been the case this term and those factors may just tilt this in their favour.
