Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid stadium

One of the biggest derbies in world football takes place on Sunday at the Wanda Metropolitano. It’s definitely the least significant and impactful Madrid derby in the past couple of seasons, but the stakes are always high when these two teams meet.

With two wins out of their last five, Atlético have put their customary top 4 finish in danger with this season’s Copa del Rey champions, Real Betis breathing down their necks. An own goal from Mario Hermoso and a 56th minute Iñaki Williams penalty handed Los Colchoneros their most recent defeat in Bilbao.

There are many reasons to explain Atlético’s failure to reclaim their title, but the most significant and visible reason is their defensive weaknesses. With the acquisition of offensive talent like Rodrigo De Paul, Antoine Griezmann and Matheus Cunha, Diego Simeone wanted to implement a more expansive approach to league games and attempt to dominate the possession and shots attempted stats more. As a result, they’ve conceded 41 goals in 34 games this season which is their worst defensive record so far during the Simeone era.

After wrapping up the title on Saturday against Espanyol, Real Madrid’s players had a massive title celebration with family and fans after the match and went on to book their spot in Paris for the Champions League final on Wednesday, thanks to an incredible comeback victory over Manchester City. There’s nothing more to play for in the league for Los Blancos now, but the players, fans and coaches know the bragging rights that this match possesses.

The phrase “give up” is not in this group of players’ vocabulary and regardless of what adversity or circumstances they face, they want to come out victorious. They were written off against PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City, but somehow they’re in the final. Some players are undeniably fatigued after 120 minutes of high intensity football on Wednesday, so some fringe players may be given the opportunity to shine here.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid

The match will start off with both teams tactically cancelling each other out, but the passion of the Atleti fans will motivate the players to show more desire to win. Atletico’s defensive problems may well continue but against what could be a much changed Real Madrid XI, they are capable of getting a result.
