It’s derby day in Valencia this Saturday and it could be the last one for a while in these parts with Levante dangerously close to relegation. They’ve never won a league game at Mestalla and this would be a brilliant time to break their duck as they look for some kind of lifeline to cling onto in their fight for safety.

Valencia come onto this on a bit of a downer after Copa del Rey Final heartbreak against Betis. Yunus Musah’s skied penalty was decisive in the shootout but the Seville club were the better side in the game too and Jose Bordalas can have few complaints with the outcome. That loss was especially bad news for Los Che given they are out of European contention in the league and look certain to need to sell one or two of their bigger name players again this summer.

Overall there have still been more positives than negatives in their first season under Bordalas with a style of play emerging and young players like Hugo Duro and Giorgi Mamardashvili impressing to bolster what remains quite a strong spine. Their financial problems suggest they may have to play the lower end of the market well again in terms of summer recruitment with moves for affordable out of contract players more likely than any blockbuster deals.

As for Levante, it’s still highly likely that their summer plans will involve planning for Segunda rather than Primera Division football. They are making a fight of their bid for a famous late escape but recent wins over Villarreal and Granada still feel like they may prove too little too late. They are still leaking goals and making defensive errors with their last two home games both ending in 3-2 defeats against Barcelona and Sevilla.

With Real Sociedad and Real Madrid following this, Levante could see their relegation confirmed relatively quickly if they can’t claim the derby spoils here. The need to live up to their successful underdog tag has never been greater and their main inspiration right now is coming from Jose Luis Morales. The 34 year old has contributed 5 goals and 3 assists in Levante’s last 4 games and is doing his very best to salvage what is a desperate situation.

Valencia vs Levante Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 3-2 Levante

There were 7 goals when these clubs met earlier in the season and you wouldn’t rule out something similar here. Levante have to roll the dice and target victories now and that should open this game up and we ought to see chances at both ends. Their poor record across town at Mestalla though does point to a home victory with Valencia eager to move on from cup final disappointment.
