Real Madrid vs Espanyol Preview

Real Madrid

Real Madrid host Espanyol this weekend at the Santiago Bernabeu. Los Blancos will be looking to pick up the points with a depleted team and they only need a draw to wrap up the league title. Both sides return to domestic action after not playing in LaLiga last weekend due to the Copa Del Rey final taking place.

Real Madrid enter this match after taking part in one of the games of the season on Tuesday night, ultimately falling 4-3 at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. Although Ancelotti’s side was not at their best, brilliant goals from Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr made for a close result that the club will take back to the Bernabeu with glee.

This result came as Real Madrid’s first loss since before the international break and their run of fine form has allowed Los Merengues to peel away from the chasing pack in LaLiga. Ancelotti’s team only need one point in this game to wrap up the club’s 35th league title and hand the Italian the ultimate crown of becoming the first manager to win all of Europe’s top five leagues. Title celebrations and a trip to Cibeles are reportedly already planned for Saturday, but Espanyol will be looking to spoil the party.

With the second leg against Manchester City taking place next week, expect Carlo Ancelotti to heavily rotate with Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr and Luka Modric likely to drop out. Outsiders such as Gareth Bale, Isco and Dani Ceballos may be given a chance whilst club legend Marcelo is sure to start with the title on the line. Mariano could return to the squad for this match.

The Catalans come into this fixture after a mixed run of results, with three wins, four losses and a draw in their last eight matches. Last time out, Vicente Moreno’s side put in a lacklustre performance which Rayo took advantage of, winning 1-0 in their first victory in LaLiga of the calendar year. The drop off in form of Raul De Tomas has not helped the parakeets, with the Spaniard only netting two goals in these eight games.

Despite their inconsistency in the league this campaign, Espanyol have still performed well against the top sides, taking five points in their seven matches against the top four. Furthermore, their three losses against these sides were hard fought, with both losses to Atletico coming late in injury time.

Real Madrid vs Espanyol Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-1 Espanyol

Espanyol’s fine performances against bigger sides combined with heavy rotation for Real Madrid could see the parakeets pick up a result in this match. Furthermore, with their second leg Champions League semi-final tie coming up, Real will likely not want to have to step into second gear in this fixture and will be looking for an untroubled match which earns Los Blancos at least a point and hands them their 35th LaLiga title.
