Alaves vs Villarreal Preview
Saturday’s action in LaLiga kicks off in Vitoria where Alaves have a vital home game against Villarreal. The hosts are propping up the league and are 6 points from safety heading into this matchday. If results go against them elsewhere, they’d be on the brink of relegation were they to lose it.
Alaves are onto their third coach of the campaign and Julio Velázquez has already delivered as many victories as his predecessor managed. That solitary win came in their last home game by a 1-0 margin against Rayo Vallecano with Joselu, who has scored half of his team’s goals this term, the predictable scorer. However a damaging 2-1 defeat in a six-pointer at Mallorca last time out has already undone the positive impact of that.
The only positive for Alaves is their schedule. This game comes at a good time with Villarreal in Champions League Semi-Final action in the weeks around it. Mid-table Celta and Espanyol, as well as fellow strugglers Levante and Cadiz are their other remaining opponents. However they are going to need to win at least 3 of those games to have any realistic chance and that’s still going to be a big ask.
This is expected to be a virtual Villarreal B team that they face here. Unai Emery has consistently rotated in recent league games before key Champions League ties and it’s surely a given that he will do likewise here. His side were outclassed in the 1st Leg of their Semi-Final at Anfield on Wednesday night, losing 2-0, but they are still just about in the tie and Emery will want his team to be in the best possible condition for Tuesday’s return at the Ceramica.
They did still manage to get a draw against fellow European hopefuls Athletic when they did something similar in terms of rotation a few weeks ago. Betis’ Copa del Rey victory means that 7th will now almost certainly be good enough for European qualification and that’s a boost for the Yellow Submarine who currently occupy that spot. They’ll be hoping to put pressure on Real Sociedad, who are 3 points above them, in a bid to secure Europa League rather than Conference League football.

Alaves vs Villarreal Predictions
Score Prediction: Alaves 1-1 Villarreal
Villarreal’s wholesale changes offer Alaves a genuine chance here but the visitors aren’t short on quality in reserve and they’ve a host of players that are eager to impress their coach or failing that other onlookers with a view to a summer move. Alaves just don’t offer enough in the final third besides Joselu and may have to settle for a point which would only really nudge them further towards the trap door to the Segunda.
