Manchester City vs Real Madrid Preview
Manchester City welcome Real Madrid to the Etihad for the first leg of the blockbuster tie in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Both teams are high on confidence and momentum but with 2020’s loss on their mind, Real Madrid will be eager to take retribution, while Man City are still yearning for their first ever Champions League title.
An emphatic 5-1 win at home to Watford saw Man City maintain their place at the top of the Premier League table at the weekend. Four goals and an assist from Gabriel Jesus aided the champions in dispatching The Hornets and continuing their pursuit of momentum and victories.
With Kyle Walker and John Stones doubtful, and Joao Cancelo suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards, Pep Guardiola will have important defensive decisions to make, especially being knowledgeable of the devastation Los Merengues can cause down their left flank through the dynamic duo of Benzema and Vinicius. Offensively, however, the former Barcelona boss has a different type of headache with the recent resurgence in form from Jesus while Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish are also all hungry and eager to make an impact on the big stage.
Los Blancos come into this match well rested as their last match was a smash and grab, 3-1 win, over Osasuna on Wednesday. El Sadar is a very challenging place to go as the fans are very demanding and Osasuna are a very physical team. So it was a mentally challenging and physically demanding game for the LaLiga leaders who now need only one more point to officially be crowned Spanish champions.
This match comes at the perfect time for Carlo Ancelotti and his team as most of their squad is high on confidence, playing fantastic football and uniting to persevere through the remainder of this season. This doesn’t mean that they’re impeccable and defensively, especially dealing with crosses, set pieces and diagonal switches in defensive transitions, there’s still room for improvement. The Kings of Europe will definitely need two phenomenal performances to get past arguably the best team in Europe, but with their relentless mentality and team spirit, anything is possible.
It’s poised to be an entertaining and tactically enthralling first leg tie between the Citizens and Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Manchester City Wins, 2 Real Madrid Wins, 2 Draws.
- City won a Last 16 tie between the sides in 2020, winning both legs 2-1.
- They’d not previously beaten Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
- Los Blancos have never won at the Etihad though, drawing here in 2012 and 2016.
João Cancelo is suspended in a major blow for Manchester City. They also have doubts over Kyle Walker and John Stones.
Eden Hazard is still injured but Real Madrid should be able to pick their strongest XI with Fede Valverde likely to feature again from the start.
Manchester City vs Real Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Real Madrid
Both teams will continue their great offensive form but neither of their efforts will be enough to come out victorious and the tie will be decided in the 2nd leg at the Bernabeu. The Etihad will be rocking and the City fans will be up for it but Real have enough experience to withstand the challenge.
