Barcelona vs Rayo Vallecano Preview

Camp Nou empty

Barcelona and Rayo Vallecano meet in LaLiga this Sunday, the only league fixture this weekend. It doesn’t feel like there’s a huge amount riding on this now with the Catalans too far back to catch Real Madrid but well on course for a top four finish, while Rayo all but achieved safety in midweek with their first win of 2022.

It’s perhaps for the best that Barcelona don’t have a huge amount to play for now as they are gripped by a defensive injury crisis which saw just about all their defenders receive treatment in some form or another in a bruising win at Real Sociedad in midweek. Dani Alves, Ronald Aruajo and Gerard Pique all left the field with injuries meaning it should be something of a patched up defence for this game.

The good news for Xavi was they bounced back from successive defeats with victory over one of the teams that could have potentially denied them a Champions League place. With Betis also losing in midweek, Barcelona will be 9 points clear of 5th with victory here and could pretty safely start to plan their summer business in the knowledge that Champions League football and revenue is secured.

As for Rayo Vallecano, this will feel like something of a free hit. They claimed their first league win of 2022 in midweek with Sergi Guardiola’s goal securing three points in Barcelona at the RCDE Stadium. That moved Rayo onto 37 points which looks as though it should be enough to guarantee survival and that’s still a great achievement for a side that was everyone’s favourites to go down.

However there will still be some disappointment at the way things have unravelled in the second half of the season and Rayo will most likely start next term as among the favourites for the drop too. Priorities this summer will include holding onto their coach with Andoni Iraola likely to be in demand given the fine job he has done in Vallecas. Rayo aren’t a club that ever spends big but they could probably do with doing some smart business and adding a bit more depth to the squad as much as anything, as they are certainly a bit short in that department.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Barcelona Wins, 1 Rayo Win.
  • Rayo won 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
  • However Barcelona have won the last 7 meetings at Camp Nou.
  • Rayo have conceded 20 goals on their last 4 visits to this ground.

Barcelona vs Rayo Vallecano Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 4-2 Rayo Vallecano

This could be a good watch with Barcelona struggling with defensive injuries and Rayo tending to adopt a positive approach. It should be quite open but with home advantage, you’d certainly expect Barcelona to come out on top.
