Mallorca vs Alaves Preview

There’s a simply massive game in LaLiga to kick off the midweek action as two sides desperate to avoid relegation meet. Mallorca head into the game 4 points better off than bottom club Alaves who suddenly approach this game with renewed hope after a weekend win.

Mallorca are testament to the fact that one win doesn’t necessarily mean a corner has been turned. Having upset Atletico Madrid to end a 7 game losing streak in their first home game under Javier Aguirre, they came crashing back down to earth with a 3-0 loss at Elche at the weekend in one of their worst results of the season.

Like so many of the sides at the bottom, they don’t pick up much on their travels so making the most of their home games is going to be key if they are going to beat the drop. Aguirre does have options if he wants to mix things up here with the likes of Franco Russo, Take Kubo, Lee Kang-in and Salva Sevilla only on the bench at the weekend. However, as his predecessor found, it’s not very clear who Mallorca’s best options are, nor is it obvious how best to fit all the pieces together.

Alaves are perhaps more limited in terms of squad depth and fresh options in attacking areas with Joselu continuing to be their only reliable source for goals. Unsurprisingly it was the Alaves forward who got the only goal in what was a “must win” home game against Rayo Vallecano at the weekend. That stopped the rot and gave the Vitoria side only their second league win since early November but they will need a few more if they are going to pull off what would be a miraculous escape.

Their away record doesn’t exactly suggest they are going to be capable of doing that. They’ve lost 10 of their last 11 on the road in all competitions with the only exception a 2-2 draw at Getafe when they were up against 10 men for most of the game. New boss Julio Velázquez has his work cut out and will need to find a way to at least make them competitive away in their final few road games. Some form of result here feels like a must.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Mallorca Wins, 3 Alaves Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Mallorca have won the last 2 meetings, including a 1-0 win in Vitoria earlier this term.
  • They are unbeaten in 6 home games against Alaves in all competitions.
  • The last 3 meetings in Palma have produced just 3 goals in total, all scored by Mallorca.

Mallorca vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-0 Alaves

Alaves’ away record is awful and although they did find a much needed win at the weekend, it still wasn’t really a performance that suggested they are going to have enough to beat the drop. Mallorca’s form isn’t exactly great either but they did win here last time out against the defending champions and they may just have the edge in what’s likely to be a tight game of few chances.
