Elche vs Mallorca Preview

Elche stadium

There’s a massive game at the bottom of LaLiga this weekend as Elche and Mallorca meet. It’s 15th vs 17th with both sides hovering above the drop-zone. Elche are 3 points better off and would be closing in on safety with victory here but defeat would see them really dragged back into the relegation mire.

Elche come into this game on the back of three straight defeats and the worry for Francisco may be that his side are just hitting a bad patch at the wrong time. All those losses were by a single goal and they have continued to be competitive since his appointment, however their home form which has carried them a long way this term, has suffered a clear dip with three straight defeats at the Estadio Martinez Valero.

They have a few selection issues but are boosted by the return of Javier Pastore after a 4 game ban. Lucas Boye is a significant absentee though. The striker has been key to many of the good things they’ve done this season. Apart from his strong all-round game, Boye has netted 7 goals, a tally no player on either side in this fixture can better in LaLiga this term.

Mallorca come into this one after a huge result last time out. Heading into their clash with defending champions Atletico Madrid, they’d lost 7 on the bounce to plummet into the bottom 3. They lost a key six-pointer at Getafe in their first game under Javier Aguirre but the Mexican would have been much more impressed by his second outing as Mallorca defeated Atletico 1-0 at home thanks to a penalty from Vedat Muriqi.

Indeed it was the perfect matchday for Mallorca with all of the other sides in the bottom 7 losing. Whether it will prove to be the turning point in their season remains to be seen but this is the first in a series of six-pointers they have to play with Alaves, Granada and Rayo Vallecano all yet to visit Palma de Mallorca. They’ve gone 5-3-2 with a more direct approach in their first two games under Aguirre and it’s pretty clearly a matter of substance over style at this point as Mallorca look to finally shed their yo-yo tag by avoiding the drop.

Elche vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 0-0 Mallorca

This is likely to be a typical relegation clash between two teams that don’t score many goals. A few weeks back, you’d have certainly fancied Elche here but Mallorca look a bit more solid defensively now and the hosts have some selection issues up top. A low-scoring or scoreless draw could be the outcome.
