Atletico Madrid vs Espanyol Preview
Atletico Madrid are back at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday, four days on from a bad-tempered and tension-fuelled Champions League clash with Manchester City. They’ll need to pick themselves up and go again with work still to do in order to secure a place in next season’s competition.
Diego Simeone’s side gave the English champions a really tough night at the Wanda Metropolitano and thwarted City’s attacking threat in a way that few teams are capable of doing. Atleti grew into the tie but couldn’t quite find the goal which would have taken it to Extra Time as tempers flared at the end of the game. At the very least, the two legs showed that Atleti have not lost the ingredients that have made them such a tough side to play against over the past decade, and there was a genuine fear that was happening earlier in the season when they were leaking goals like they hadn’t ever done before under Diego Simeone.
They’d reeled off 6 straight league wins too prior to a surprise defeat at Mallorca last time out. With no cup distractions any more, they can focus on the job of trying to end what will be a trophyless season on a positive note. Depending on other results, they may have dropped out of the top four by the time this kicks off, so they can ill afford any Champions League hangovers here.
Espanyol are probably the kind of side you want to play at this stage in the season, particularly at home. Vicente Moreno’s men have been pretty poor on their travels all campaign with an average return of just 0.53 points per game away from the RCDE Stadium. Only four sides have worse away records and it’s the main reason why Espanyol are heading for a mid-table finish, rather than pushing for the final European places.
They do take what should be a full strength squad to Madrid with the exception of the suspended Yangel Herrera. It’s perhaps a chance for the Espanyol boss to experiment a bit and try something different as they really need to find a way to start picking up more results and conceding less goals away from home thinking ahead to next season.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Atletico Wins, 2 Espanyol Wins, 1 Draw.
- Atleti won 2-1 at the RCDE Stadium last term.
- They’ve won 8 of their last 10 home games against Osasuna.
- Espanyol did win 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano in May 2018.
Atletico Madrid vs Espanyol Predictions
Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Espanyol
Atleti would have exerted a lot of energy on Wednesday night so there is a small window of opportunity for Espanyol here. However their poor away record suggests an upset is still unlikely and the hosts should find a way to get back to winning ways to boost their hopes of a top four finish.
