Barcelona vs Eintracht Frankfurt Preview

Camp Nou empty

Barcelona are in Europa League action this Thursday as they bid to get the better of Eintracht Frankfurt in order to seal a place in the last four. It’s 1-1 from the 1st Leg after Ferran Torres levelled things for the Catalans after Ansgar Knauff had opened the scoring for the German side.

Xavi’s men had to deal with a loud and passionate atmosphere in Frankfurt and it wasn’t a vintage display but they’ll be happy enough to get back to Camp Nou with things all square. Barcelona are yet to win at home in the knockout stage of the Europa League but it’s a slightly different scenario here, with draws against Napoli and Galatasaray having been in the 1st Leg of their previous two ties.

Barça didn’t quite reach the heights they’ve set in recent weeks at the weekend either, but they still emerged victorious at Levante despite conceding three penalties in the game. Not for the first time this season, Luuk de Jong headed in a late goal to seal a 3-2 win and the Dutchman has proved more useful than many expected and does offer up a handy option should Xavi decide to mix things up a bit and look for a Plan B.

Eintracht Frankfurt will travel to Catalunya as the clear underdogs and in truth there has been little from them this season, besides a competitive 1st Leg display, which suggests they should really be a match for a much improved Barcelona side. Oliver Glasner’s side are winless in 6 games in all competitions and were beaten 2-1 at home by Freiburg in the Bundesliga at the weekend.

They currently sit 9th in the German top flight but can take some confidence from having already won away to LaLiga opposition in this season’s competition. A 2-1 1st Leg win at Betis in the last round helped set up this tie but they may sense a missed opportunity having failed to convert more than once in the 1st Leg of this tie which saw them have 16 attempts on the Barcelona goal.

Head to Head

  • The sides drew 1-1 in the 1st Leg last week in Germany.
  • That was the first ever meeting between the clubs.

Team News

Dani Alves is ineligible for the hosts. Gerard Pique is an injury doubt. Memphis Depay and Sergiño Dest are definitely out injured while Ansu Fati isn’t ready to make his return yet.

Tuta is suspended for the Germans. They have doubts over Djibril Sow and Christopher Lenz.

Possible Lineups

Barcelona vs Eintracht Frankfurt Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt (AGG: 3-2 Barcelona)

Barcelona do have a number of injury problems and you do worry for them defensively a bit here, particularly if Gerard Pique doesn’t shake off his problem. Eintracht Frankfurt may have some joy in the final third but Barcelona still haven’t lost inside 90 minutes in 2022 and they have a bit of extra quality which should see them through into the Semi-Finals.
