Real Madrid vs Chelsea Preview

Real Madrid

The Santiago Bernabeu will host the second leg of Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter final tie against Chelsea this Tuesday evening. Los Blancos will be looking to seal a place in the semi-finals whilst the Blues will be looking to turn around the deficit from the first leg.

The first leg saw a Karim Benzema hattrick seal a comfortable 3-1 win for Los Blancos at Stamford Bridge. The Frenchman glanced home two brilliant headers just after the twenty minute mark before a rare mistake from Thibaut Courtois allowed Kai Havertz to get a goal back for Chelsea.

However, a mix up at the back between Antonio Rudiger and Edouard Mendy right after half time gave Benzema the opportunity to score his hat-trick, which he took with glee. Carlos Casemiro and Dani Carvajal returned to their former selves in this match as both displayed arguably their best performances of the season.

Los Blancos grabbed another welcome result at the weekend, with a relatively untroubled 2-0 win against city neighbours Getafe allowing Carlo Ancelotti’s side to extend their lead at the top of La Liga without having to get out of second gear.

Chelsea went into the weekend with something to prove and did so with a 6-0 drubbing of Southampton away at Saint Mary’s. This result will boost the confidence of manager Thomas Tuchel as many have questioned Chelsea’s lack of consistency at the top end of the field, but both Timo Werner and Kai Havertz combined for three goals in this game.

Head to Head

  • Real Madrid won the 1st Leg 3-1 last week in London.
  • That was their first ever competitive victory over Chelsea.
  • The sides met in the Semi Finals of the Champions League last season, with the result at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium ending in a 1-1 draw.
  • Chelsea would go on to win that tie 3-1 on aggregate.

Team News

Real Madrid will be missing Eder Militão through suspension, although Ferland Mendy, Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric will likely return to Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven after being rested at the weekend.

Thomas Tuchel should be without Romelu Lukaku through an Achilles problem and Cesar Azpilicueta could miss out after testing positive for Covid-19. Ben Chilwell and Callum Hudson-Odoi are still out with long term injuries suffered earlier in the campaign.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid vs Chelsea Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea (AGG: 4-2)

Chelsea will be looking to restore some pride after the result in the first leg and should remain competitive, although the experience of Real Madrid should see Los Blancos through and advance to the Champions League semi-finals where they would play either city rivals Atletico Madrid or Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
