Sunday’s action in LaLiga commences in Pamplona with a derby between Osasuna and Alaves. It’s a bigger game for the visitors who are under new management and desperate for a result which could help spark their latest escape act but their situation is now perilous with the Vitoria side propping up the division heading into this weekend.

There are no such worries for Osasuna. As has been the case in each of the last two seasons, Jagoba Arrasate’s side are comfortable and can afford to use the final weeks of the campaign to experiment a little and look towards the 2022/23 campaign. If they are looking for that bit of extra motivation, it may be to try and finish higher than 10th which would be their best finish since returning to the top flight in 2019.

That is the position Osasuna currently hold but they will back themselves to win this one and pass the 40 point mark. They’ve won on their last 2 outings at El Sadar and their home form has generally improved as the season has progressed. They do come into the game on a bit of a downer though having lost 4-1 at Betis last time out despite their opponents being without a number of key players.

Alaves would have seen flaws in that Osasuna performance that they may look to exploit. However they have plenty of their own to address too and that task now falls into the hands of Julio Velázquez after José Luis Mendilibar was fired following a 4-1 defeat away to Atletico Madrid last time out, with just one league win during his difficult and ultimately short reign.

Velázquez is only 40 years old but he has already spent more than a decade as a head coach and has previously spent short periods at both Villarreal and Real Betis when both clubs were in the Segunda Division. He has never reached the 100 game mark at any of the clubs he has been at, and has only once made it past 50 once (Alcorcon 2016-18) but he has clearly been appointed to have a short-term impact with Alaves needing results and fast if they are going to stay alive this term.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Osasuna Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Osasuna have dominated the meetings in recent years, including four straight wins in Vitoria.
  • They won 2-0 there earlier this term in the reverse fixture.
  • Alaves’ last win at El Sadar was via a 1-0 margin in 2016.

Osasuna vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Osasuna 2-1 Alaves

Alaves have made successful coaching changes late on in recent seasons and that has been part of their formula for staying in the top flight. However a repeat looks less likely this term. They are so heavily reliant on Joselu for attacking inspiration and it’s hard to make a strong case for them getting a result here, even allowing for a bit of a reaction to the coaching change.
