Mallorca vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Atletico Madrid visit Palma de Mallorca this weekend for a league fixture sandwiched in between the two legs of their Champions League Quarter-Final with Manchester City. Mallorca will be hoping the visitors opt to rest players and they could certainly do with a slice of good fortune after a run of seven straight defeats.
The first six of those losses came under Luis Garcia but it was also a losing start for new boss Javier Aguirre last time out. We saw a change in style right away with Mallorca playing much more directly and for 45 minutes they managed to prevent Getafe having any clear openings in the relegation six-pointer at the Coliseum. However their hosts made changes at the break, and helped by a red card to Mallorca’s Franco Russo, won the game late on.
Mallorca didn’t really offer any kind of goal threat in that game so Aguirre will need to find a way to bring greater solidity whilst maintaining some kind of creative threat. He may stick with a 3-5-2 for this game but they desperately need to stop the rot and any kind of result would be a huge bonus here with a couple of more winnable games against bottom half opposition following this.
Atletico Madrid are on a roll though with six straight league wins having pushed them back into the top four and put them firmly on course for Champions League qualification once more. Joao Felix has been among the players to show signs of improvement and that’s a major plus for Atletico fans as they finally sense they may be starting to get the best out of their record signing.
This match does provide something of a dilemma for Diego Simeone. He will unquestionably have one eye on Wednesday’s return game with Manchester City following a 1-0 defeat in England in the 1st Leg last week. You will expect at least some light rotation here but with only a 4 point cushion on 4th place heading into the weekend, the Atleti boss may decide he cannot yet afford wholesale changes in the league.

Mallorca vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Mallorca 0-1 Atletico Madrid
These are dark times for Mallorca and it’s hard to see them turning a corner in this match. Aguirre may tighten things up defensively but they were void of any serious goal threat in their opening game under him and with Atleti making less errors at the back now, the visitors should have enough to win the game.
