Villarreal vs Bayern Munich Preview

Villarreal stadium

Villarreal’s European adventure sees them face their sternest challenge yet when they host Bayern Munich in the Champions League Quarter-Final 1st Leg this week. The Yellow Submarine will be huge underdogs for the tie but can take confidence from an inspired showing to see off Juventus in the last round.

Having held the Italian giants to a 1-1 draw in the 1st Leg in Spain, Villarreal had to dig deep at times in the 2nd Leg but largely thwarted Juve and took the sting out of the game. They then threw on Samu Chukwueze and a fit again Gerard Moreno in the closing stages and produced a stunning late performance to win 3-0 with all the goals coming in the 78th minute or later.

Villarreal are into the last eight of the Champions League for the third time as a result, but first in 13 years so this will be a huge occasion at the Ceramica. They will need to be at their best in every regard to compete with the Bavarians and it’s safe to say that hasn’t been the case in their recent league games. Since winning in Turin, Villarreal have slumped to poor defeats to nil away to struggling Cadiz and Levante.

Bayern will be anticipating a stronger showing from the Yellow Submarine on Wednesday night. They are one of the clear favourites to go all the way in the competition and have fond memories of recent clashes with LaLiga sides. They beat Barcelona twice by 3-0 margins in the group stage, one which they finished with a 100% record. There was a minor hiccup in the form of a 1-1 draw in the 1st Leg of their Last 16 tie against Salzburg but they made a real statement by demolishing the Austrians 7-1 in the return.

Their record in European and intercontinental competitions is pretty extraordinary with 29 wins and only 1 defeat from their last 32 matches. That loss did come at this stage last season though when they were defeated on away goals by PSG, a rule that of course no longer applies this term. They’ve scored 4 in their last 2 Bundesliga games as well and should take all the confidence in the world into this.

Head to Head

  • The clubs have only met once before in Europe.
  • That was in the 2011/12 Champions League group stage when Bayern won 2-0 away and 3-1 at home.

Team News

Alberto Moreno is out long-term for Villarreal but they are in better-shape injury wise than they were in Turin with Gerard Moreno now fit enough to start. Samuel Chukwueze is a doubt.

Corentin Tolisso is a doubt for Bayern. Alphonso Davies is training again following heart issues and could return after three months.

Possible Lineups

Villarreal vs Bayern Munich Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 1-1 Bayern Munich

There’s not a lot wrong with this Bayern side and they could even be at full strength with Davies available again. It’s a step up in class for Villarreal but they have risen to the challenge admirably in Europe over the past 18 months and the Yellow Submarine may have enough about them to get a result to ensure they stay in the tie heading into the 2nd Leg in Munich.
