Levante vs Villarreal Preview

Levante match action

There’s a local derby in the Valencian region this weekend as Villarreal make the short trip to the Ciutat de Valencia. The visitors will have one eye on next week’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich but cannot afford to keep dropping points in LaLiga as their future in next season’s European competitions is very much uncertain at this point.

Levante’s immediate future looks clearer and sadly for them it is surely going to involve relegation to the Segunda Division. They are 8 points from safety heading into the final 9 games of the season. At the very least, they may need to win 5 of those matches to stand a realistic shot of survival. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility but with only 3 league wins all season, it looks highly unlikely.

Alessio Lisci won’t have given up just yet and will know that if they could somehow pull off an upset here, Levante would suddenly have reason to believe again. Given they still have to face Barcelona, Sevilla and Real Madrid, they need to quickly rediscover some of the ingredients that have allowed them to stay at this level for so long. They do have an eye for an upset, however they’ve been further hampered over the past week by an injury to Jorge de Frutos who leads the way for Levante with 11 goal contributions in LaLiga but may now miss the rest of the season.

If the Villarreal that played their last league game at Cadiz shows up, then Levante will certainly have a chance here. Unai Emery’s men were very poor in that game, managing just 3 shots on goal, the lowest of any team in LaLiga on matchday 29, in a 1-0 defeat. That did come just four days after a wonderful 3-0 win at Juventus in the Champions League and those two results perhaps sum this team up.

Villarreal have lacked the consistency to be serious top four contenders this term and are 7th heading into this weekend. While the UCL quarter-final with Bayern will take centre-stage over the next fortnight, they really do need to keep accumulating points in LaLiga. 7th may not even be enough for UEFA Conference League football in 2022/23 and there would of course be financial consequences should Unai Emery’s side miss out on European qualification altogether which could force them into summer sales.

Head to Head

  • Levante had won 4 of the previous 5 meetings at the Ciutat de Valencia.

Levante vs Villarreal Predictions

Score Prediction: Levante 0-2 Villarreal

While it was understandable to some extent that Villarreal weren’t at their best last time out after the excitement and emotion of Turin, the manner of the defeat would still have angered Emery. He will look for a reaction here and he should get it from what ought to be very close to their strongest XI with Gerard Moreno now recovered from his injury struggles.
