Athletic Club vs Elche Preview

Elche head up to the Basque country this weekend to take on Athletic Club at San Mames. Marcelino’s side will be looking to rekindle the fight for a European spot whilst Elche will look to further distance themselves from the relegation zone.
Athletic’s form has been up and down as of late, with their last five fixtures bringing two wins, two losses and a draw. Last time out the Basques were much the better side whilst hosting Getafe but were unable to achieve more than one point despite Getafe ending the match with only nine men on the field.
The club’s inconsistency is one of the main reasons Athletic find themselves with little hope of ending the season with tangible success. Not only is a European spot in LaLiga unlikely, but the club defeated both Barcelona and Real Madrid on their way to the Copa Del Rey semi-finals, only to be knocked out by Jose Bordalas’ Valencia.
In the early months of the season, Elche looked doomed to go down however after appointing current coach Francisco in late November, the club has excelled by their standards achieving 20 points out of 42. Admittedly, the Valencian side have lost three out of their last four matches, although they put on competitive displays against both Barcelona and Valencia when controversial refereeing calls hindered their chances of picking up points.
Captain Fidel Chaves will be looking to keep up his fine form, scoring three of Elche’s last seven goals whilst Pere Milla’s strikes have dried up as of late, with his last goals coming in a 3-1 win over Alaves in early February.
Josan will hope to start after extending his contract with Elche in midweek whilst forward Lucas Boye will be full of confidence after earning his first minutes for the Argentine national team last weekend in a substitute appearance in a 3-0 win over Venezuela.
