Spain play another friendly match this Tuesday as they swap Barcelona and the RCDE Stadium for Galicia and the Riazor. The struggles of Deportivo La Coruña in recent years mean this is currently only a third tier ground but it’ll be good to see some of the stars of Spanish football strut their stuff in La Coruña once more.

La Roja’s first match of this international window saw them beat Albania 2-1 on Saturday night. It wasn’t a massively convincing result with Spain’s recent struggles when it comes to breaking down defensive sides largely repeated. They had 82% possession in the game but took 75 minutes to find a breakthrough with Ferran Torres netting only for Granada’s Myrto Uzuni to level things up soon after. Spain’s blushes were spared by substitute Dani Olmo’s late winner.

Changes will be expected here with experimentation the name of the game right now for Luis Enrique. He gave Brentford’s David Raya a debut in goal against Albania but Unai Simon may return here. The likes of Yeremi Pino and Carlos Soler could also be granted fresh chances to impress before all attention turns to the 2022 World Cup draw later this week with Spain set to be among the top seeds.

Iceland won’t be in that draw. Their fortunes have taken a turn for the worse since a remarkable period in their international history which saw the minnows qualify for both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. Their bid to reach Qatar was a disappointment from the off though as they finished 5th in their group with their only victories coming against Liechtenstein.

Their only other victory since the start of last year was a friendly win against the Faroes so this is clearly not a great moment for the Icelandic side and they will arguably present a lesser test than the one provided by Albania last week. Iceland have been in Spain for some time and played a friendly in Murcia on Saturday, drawing 1-1 against Finland.

Head to Head

  • The sides haven’t met since qualifying for Euro 2008.
  • Spain would of course go on to win that tournament but they found Iceland a tough nut to crack, winning only 1-0 at home and drawing 1-1 away.
  • The sides also drew 0-0 in a 2006 friendly.

Team News

Robert Sánchez has withdrawn from this squad due to Covid-19. Raúl de Tomás and Diego Llorente also withdrew from the initial squad due to injury. The likes of Yeremi Pino, Carlos Soler, Unai Simon and Marcos Llorente are contenders to come into the XI.

Iceland’s squad has been weakened by injuries to Elias Olafsson, Hjortur Hermannsson and Gudmundur Thorarinsson.

Spain vs Iceland Predictions

Score Prediction: Spain 2-0 Iceland

We may see a slightly experimental lineup here from Spain but they have sufficient depth in their ranks to win this game no matter who comes in. There are clearly places up for grabs in this side as we build towards the World Cup so motivation shouldn’t be an issue and a home win certainly looks likely.
