Spain vs Albania Preview

RCDE Stadium

Spain play their first game of 2022 this weekend and it’s a rare visit to Catalunya for La Roja as the RCDE Stadium plays host to an international for the first time. Not since a 2004 friendly against Peru at the Lluís Companys Olympic stadium have Spain played a game in Barcelona and given the political developments since then regarding Catalan independence, the venue is to some extent a controversial choice.

This isn’t exactly a high profile game though with a friendly against Albania only really a chance for Luis Enrique to experiment a bit as he begins to look towards the World Cup at the end of the year. 1-0 wins over Greece and Sweden in their final qualifiers in the autumn secured passage to Qatar but it wasn’t exactly smooth progress with Spain in real danger of slipping into the play-offs for much of the group and we’ve had plenty of evidence this week with Italy’s exit of how difficult that might have been.

After an impressive run at Euro 2020 and with some bright young talents emerging, there is renewed optimism that Spain could be serious contenders in Qatar. They are certainly well blessed in terms of midfield options with Pedri and Gavi both shining at Barcelona. Indeed much-like the triumphant class of 2010, this Spain side may be Barça-heavy with Ferran Torres also a likely starter in attack and he should be joined by Ansu Fati once he shakes off his injury problems.

There is only one uncapped player in this squad and that’s Brentford goalkeeper David Raya and we may see a bit of experimentation across the two games with another friendly against Iceland to come next week.

As for Albania, they won’t be heading to the World Cup but they did have a reasonably strong qualifying campaign which saw them win home and away against Euro 2020 finalists Hungary but they were beaten heavily away to both England and Poland meaning the Balkan side had to settle for 3rd place in the group.

Reaching Euro 2024 will be a more realistic goal for Albania and they’ll just be keen to give a good account of themselves here you’d imagine with no real pressure on them to get a result. Their squad has few outright stars but they do have a number of players playing in Europe’s big leagues including LaLiga’s Iván Balliu, Myrto Uzuni and Keidi Bare with the latter in action at his usual club ground here.

Head to Head

  • The only recent meetings came in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
  • Spain won 2-0 in Shkodër before a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture which was played in Alicante.

Team News

Diego Llorente and Raul De Tomas have both pulled out of the Spain squad due to injury. Valencia’s Hugo Guillamón has been added as a replacement.

Enea Mihaj and Nedim Bajrami have both withdrawn from the Albania squad.

Spain vs Albania Predictions

Score Prediction: Spain 3-0 Albania

This should be a routine enough win for Spain. We have seen them struggle at times to break down stubborn defensive teams but the way Albania were opened up by the likes of England and Poland in World Cup qualifying suggests they will not have enough about them to hold off La Roja for 90 minutes.
