Espanyol vs Mallorca Preview
Espanyol boss Vicente Moreno faces off against his former club this weekend in LaLiga. Things have panned out pretty well for both parties since they parted company in the summer of 2020 and right now there’s a good chance that both of these newly promoted sides will be in the top flight next term.
There can be little doubt that Espanyol will be in LaLiga again for 2022/23. That’s despite a fairly poor start to the new year with just one league win to date in 2022. That came in their last home game against Getafe and they looked on course to back it up at Levante last time out before being pegged back late on as substitute goalkeeper Joan Garcia failed to deal with a cross, allowing Dani Gomez in to equalise.
The result moved Espanyol on to 33 points and they can really afford to start planning for next season at this level if they can record another victory here. An ability to beat the bottom teams at home has been key to Espanyol amassing points this season. Mallorca are the only current bottom six team they’re yet to host heading into this matchday but they’ve beaten all of the other 5 lowest ranked sides at home, keeping a clean sheet in 4 of those games.
That’s an ominous omen for Mallorca as they make the trip to Barcelona. The visitors are in considerably more immediate danger and are clearly in a relegation scrap after five straight defeats. Another here would perhaps raise questions once more about Luis Garcia and whether or not the Mallorca board may opt to replicate some of their relegation rivals by changing coaches during the upcoming international break and hoping for a boost from a new boss to see them over the line.
They were well beaten 3-0 by Real Madrid on Monday night, although the scoreline did flatter Los Blancos a little. They are hovering just above the drop-zone heading into this matchday and could really do with salvaging something from this match, if only to stop the rot and boost morale heading into the international break.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Espanyol Wins, 3 Mallorca Wins, 1 Draw.
- Mallorca have won the last 2 meetings including a 2-1 Copa del Rey win in January in Palma.
- The last meeting at the RCDE Stadium ended in a 0-0 draw in the Segunda Division last season.
- Espanyol have won the last 3 top flight meetings in Barcelona.
Espanyol vs Mallorca Predictions
Score Prediction: Espanyol 2-0 Mallorca
Espanyol have been playing pretty well at home and could easily have chalked up a couple more victories since the turn of the year so their record of only 1 win in 2022 isn’t a totally fair reflection on their level. With Mallorca badly out of form and looking low on confidence once more, a home win seems the likely outcome here.
