Cadiz vs Villarreal Preview

Villarreal travel to Andalusia this weekend to take on a relegation-threatened Cadiz side. The hosts have been performing pretty well in recent weeks though and will fancy they can spring a surprise on the visitors who will still be on cloud nine following their Champions League win in Turin in midweek.

Cadiz come into this game after a 2-1 defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano on the most recent matchday. The scoreline really didn’t tell the full story though with Cadiz putting in a really impressive display and going toe to toe with the defending champions for much of the game. The performance would have certainly encouraged Sergio but he’ll be well aware that they have to turn good performances into good results if they are going to stand a chance of beating the drop.

They do have the toughest schedule of the sides battling it out near the bottom so they will need to pull off a few upsets along the way. This may be one of their better opportunities to turn over one of the top teams but Cadiz’s ability to win just once at home all season clearly doesn’t bode particularly well. That did at least come in their most recent home match, a 2-0 win over out of form Rayo Vallecano.

Villarreal head here following a remarkable European success as they scored three late goals to win 3-0 against Juventus in Turin. It must go down as one of the all-time great away results for Spanish clubs in European competition, not least given it was not produced by one of the traditional powerhouses such as Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Unai Emery is once again showing himself to be a master on the European stage and in a two-legged format, but somewhat typically for the former Sevilla and Arsenal boss, they’ve been dropping points a bit too frequently in the league. The Yellow Submarine are only 7th heading into this game and that’s not guaranteed to be enough for European qualification. Missing out on Europe, or even slipping into the Conference League may have serious consequences in terms of Villarreal’s recruitment in the summer and may even force them into sales so it’s vital they don’t put all their eggs in the Champions League basket despite the excitement that will surround their upcoming Quarter-Final.

Cadiz vs Villarreal Predictions

Score Prediction: Cadiz 1-1 Villarreal

Cadiz have raised their level since the coaching change and they are giving their opponents a real test all of a sudden. Villarreal blow hot and cold to some extent and they may struggle to find the same intensity again so soon after their trip to Italy. A draw could be the result here.
