Villarreal vs Celta Vigo Preview

Villarreal stadium

This has the makings of a really good game between two teams who boast plenty of technically very solid players. Villarreal are hoping to stay in the race for Champions League football but Celta Vigo will know they can really thrust themselves into the European picture with what would be a 4th straight win against Villarreal at the Ceramica.

The Yellow Submarine will also have one eye on their UCL date in Turin this coming week. After a draw in the 1st Leg but a strong display, Unai Emery’s side will carry belief into that fixture but they’ll know they can’t really afford to take their eyes off the ball here. They were really building up a head of steam in LaLiga with 13 points from 5 games but a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Osasuna last time out was a real setback in their bid for a top four finish.

Villarreal are a frustrating team in many respects, in that they’ve produced several of the most impressive team displays this season including a 5-1 win over Espanyol in their most recent home game. However all those early season draws and the odd unexpected below-par display means they are playing catch-up on the top four and will most likely have to settle for at best Europa League football in 2022/23.

Celta Vigo would take any form of European action but a bit like last season, you sense they may fall just short. As ever, Iago Aspas is doing his best to fire his local club onto greater things and it was his late penalty that settled a 4-3 thriller against Mallorca last time out at Balaidos. However they’d won only 1 of their previous 5 games and are only on the fringes of the European race as a result.

The Galicians have shown themselves to be stronger defensively this season which will please Chacho Coudet. They have an excellent 54% clean sheet ratio on their travels which suggests Villarreal may have to work hard for their openings in this game but the hosts do average an impressive 2.43 goals per home game which suggests they may find a breakthrough.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Villarreal Wins, 3 Celta Wins, 1 Draw.
  • None of the last 5 meetings between the clubs have produced a home win.
  • Celta have won on their last 3 visits to the Ceramica scoring 3+ goals every time.
  • Indeed the last 5 meetings on this ground have produced 25 goals in total.

Villarreal vs Celta Vigo Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 2-1 Celta Vigo

Villarreal will be looking ahead to Turin but they aren’t expected to rest too many players and those that start will be eager to impress ahead of the Champions League tie. They’ve been scoring for fun at home of late and even the loss of Gerard Moreno to injury hasn’t hampered that which suggests they may be just too strong for Celta here.
