Rayo Vallecano vs Sevilla Preview

Estadio Vallecas

We have an interesting game in store this weekend as Rayo Vallecano play host to Sevilla. The outcome of it, may tell us quite a bit about how things may pan out for these two clubs this term. A win for Rayo would stop the rot and instantly ease any fears they could slip into a real relegation battle. That outcome would also surely all but kill off Sevilla’s hopes of challenging Real Madrid for the title.

Rayo Vallecano won’t be too fussed about that and they won’t be panicking just yet, but it’s pretty clear that they do need a result sooner or later. 6 straight defeats is enough to set the alarm bells ringing in any situation in football and while they maintain a healthy advantage on the relegation zone, they do now increasingly look like they may end up fighting for their lives.

They are very dependent on home results but they’ve played all but one of the teams in the bottom half currently in Vallecas. That means they are going to need to upset one of the stronger teams or find a rare result or two on their travels if they are going to ultimately pull themselves up towards the 40 point mark. Neither of those things are impossible but they are hampered here by two significant absentees with Alvaro Garcia and Isi Palazon both suspended.

Sevilla will be hoping to take advantage of Rayo’s decline but they’ll need to play better than they have in some of their recent league games. They’ve drawn 5 of their last 7 matches, including all of their last 4 away. In truth, they didn’t really deserve anything more than a point from their recent trips to Espanyol and Alaves, results and performances which suggest they are lacking a few extra ingredients needed in order to really challenge Real Madrid for the title.

There’s even an argument to be made that it might even be in Sevilla’s best interests to focus on the Europa League with the gap to Real Madrid standing at 8 points with just 11 to play. They beat West Ham 1-0 at home on Thursday night and will be favourites to move into the Quarter-Finals. Having won the competition six times already, they’ll certainly be dreaming of number seven which might even be the most special of the lot with the Final at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in May.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Sevilla Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Sevilla have scored 12 goals across their last 3 games against Rayo.
  • That includes a 3-0 win earlier this term in Andalusia.
  • They’ve won on 3 of their last 4 trips to Vallecas.

Rayo Vallecano vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 0-2 Sevilla

Rayo’s downward spiral is pretty alarming although some of their performances haven’t been that bad with cup distractions also perhaps a factor. They are still certainly capable of regrouping and finding a couple of wins before the season is out to beat the drop, but they don’t really have convincing replacements for the likes of Isi Palazon and Alvaro Garcia who are both missing here. It may be a seventh straight defeat for the hosts against strong opposition.
