Atletico Madrid vs Cadiz Preview

There’s Friday night action from the Wanda Metropolitano this week as Atletico Madrid entertain Cadiz in LaLiga. Atleti will be grateful for the extra day’s rest in the build up to their key Champions League clash with Manchester United next week but they can’t afford to take their eye off the ball here.

Given they’ve already lost at home to bottom club Levante in 2022, no games can be taken as a guaranteed three points but it does now feel as though they may have turned a corner to some extent. Since losing to the Valencia club, Atleti have won 3 straight games in LaLiga and also put in a strong performance in the 1st Leg against United where they should have got a better result than a 1-1 draw.

Most recently, they went to Seville and beat Real Betis 3-1 with Joao Felix impressing with a brace. They moved above their opponents and into the top four as a result and the path to Champions League qualification suddenly looks a great deal smoother. While rightly many have focused on their defensive frailties this term, it is worth noting that Atleti have scored more goals than Barcelona and Sevilla, and are only 6 behind leaders Real Madrid. Their average of 1.85 goals/game is better than in their title winning campaign last term so a lack of firepower hasn’t really been an issue.

The same can’t be said of Cadiz who are the second lowest scorers in LaLiga. No Cadiz player has netted more than 5 times in LaLiga with Choco Lozano and Alvaro Negredo their joint top scorers. New boss Sergio hasn’t really found any solutions in that regard but he has made them much tougher to break down which has resulted in an unbeaten run of 4 games heading into this one.

They even finally recorded a first home win of the season last time out, seeing off Rayo Vallecano 2-0 with January arrivals Oussama Idrissi and Ruben Alcaraz getting the goals. The latter has been particularly impressive since reuniting with his former boss but the overall outlook still looks fairly bleak for Cadiz. They remain in the bottom 3 and have a huge task on their hands when it comes to beating the drop given they still have to play all of the top 9 sides in their final 11 fixtures, starting with this game.

Head to Head

  • Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 4 Atleti Wins, 1 Cadiz Win.
  • Cadiz have lost 3-0 and 4-0 on their 2 league visits to Atletico Madrid this century.
  • Atleti also won 4-1 when they visited Cadiz earlier this term.
  • Cadiz’s only recent league win over Los Rojiblancos came via a 1-0 margin in 2005/06.

Atletico Madrid vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Cadiz

Both sides come into this game in improved form but overall there is a clear gulf in quality. Atletico Madrid appear to be building a bit of momentum at last and will want a solid all-round display heading into their trip to Manchester. It’s hard to look past a home win.
