Sevilla vs West Ham Preview

Kings of the Europa League Sevilla host David Moyes’ West Ham in a blockbuster tie in the Europa League Round of 16 this Thursday evening. Both sides will take a break from their domestic campaigns to focus on an enthralling encounter at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Sevilla enter this tie after a lacklustre performance away at Alaves on Friday night which may have all but ended any slim chance of the Andalusians picking up their first LaLiga title since 1946. Even in an underwhelming show from Julen Lopetegui’s side, the game finished 0-0 once again highlighting the team’s ability to defend resolutely, with this match bringing the club’s fourteenth clean sheet of this LaLiga campaign.
Sevilla entered this competition after falling out of the UEFA Champions League at the group phase and dispatching Dinamo Zagreb 3-2 on aggregate in the previous round of the Europa League. The club have become masters of this competition in the past two decades, winning the trophy six times since 2005 and winning finals against English opposition in two of those campaigns (Middlesbrough in 2006 and Liverpool in 2016). Furthermore, Julen Lopetegui won this competition with the club in 2020 after dismissing Premier League opposition Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
The Andalusians can be more than proud of what they have achieved this season and with a top four spot seemingly already set, they will give this competition their all and are one of the favourites to make the final, taking place in their own stadium on the 18th of May.
West Ham come into this fixture after a hard-fought match which ended in a loss to Premier League giants Liverpool on Saturday evening. Huge misses from Pablo Fornals and Manuel Lanzini proved costly for David Moyes’ side, who came away from Anfield with their heads held high but no points in the bag.
The Hammers have enjoyed a fine season domestically, as they continue to fight for a Champions League spot, currently sitting only three points behind fourth place Arsenal.
David Moyes’ tendency to switch formations depending on the opposition allows West Ham to be an entertaining yet unpredictable side to watch. Do not be surprised if the Scotsman decides to go with three at the back and flood the midfield in this tie in order to put pressure on Sevilla’s backline and not allow Ivan Rakitic and Joan Jordan time on the ball in the middle of the park.
This season, the Hammers have reached as far as they ever have in this competition, after exiting before the group stages in all of their four previous Europa League campaigns.
Head to Head
- This is the first ever meeting between the two sides.
Team News
January signing Anthony Martial should miss this tie through injury and Diego Carlos is a doubt after missing Sevilla’s trip to Alaves on Friday night. Thomas Delaney is suspended for this tie after being sent off in the last round against Dinamo Zagreb.
West Ham could be without star player Jarrod Bowen after the forward was subbed off early against Liverpool with a blow to the heel. The Hammers will be hoping to have Declan Rice back in midfield after he missed the trip to Anfield through illness.
Possible Lineups
Sevila vs West Ham Predictions
Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 West Ham
We expect both sides to put in strong performances that will have the game end with a close result. Sevilla’s experience in this competition should see them through over the two legs, but the tie could very much be in the balance by the time Julen Lopetegui’s side travel to the London Stadium next week.
