Real Betis vs Eintracht Frankfurt Preview
Real Betis are in Europa League action again this Wednesday. With two clubs from Seville still in the competition and both at home in the 1st Legs, Betis’ clash with Eintracht Frankfurt has been moved forward 24 hours from the usual Thursday slot.
Based on their form overall this season, Betis are one of the strongest remaining teams in the Europa League and have a real shot at going deep in the competition. However some of their recent displays haven’t been their best and you worry if fatigue may be starting to set in for a side that has also made it to a Copa del Rey Final and is competing for a top four finish in LaLiga.
Their chances of that were dealt a blow at the weekend. A 3-1 home defeat against fellow hopefuls Atletico Madrid saw them drop out of the top four where they’ve been for most of the winter. It’s now 4 games without a win for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, a run which started with a nervy 0-0 draw against Zenit in their home 2nd Leg in the previous round of this competition which saw them advance to this tie. They’d won 8 out of 9 in all competitions heading into that game so it’s clear there has been a genuine drop-off.
Eintracht Frankfurt will be hoping to take advantage of that. The German side took Chelsea to penalties in the Semi-Finals of this competition in 2019 but were knocked out by Basel at this stage in their most recent European adventure two years ago. They’ve made smooth progress so far this season in the Europa League, with three wins and three draws ensuring they topped a group which also featured Fenerbahce, Olympiacos and Antwerp.
That gave them a bye in the last round so it’s been over two months since they played a European game. Their domestic form since then has been fairly mixed and they only lie 10th in the Bundesliga which suggests Betis should be seen as favourites for this tie. They’d actually suffered 3 straight defeats to nil before a much needed morale boost at the weekend as they went to Hertha Berlin and won 4-1.
Head to Head
- This will be the first competitive meeting.
Alex Moreno, Martín Montoya and Juan Miranda are out injured for the home team. Andres Guardado is a doubt.
Gonçalo Paciência is suspended for the visitors. Diant Ramaj and Ragnar Ache are injured.
Real Betis vs Eintracht Frankfurt Predictions
Score Prediction: Real Betis 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
From a perspective of Spanish bias, it’s a shame to see Betis appearing to show signs of tiredness heading into this game and you wonder if their successful Copa del Rey run is already damaging their league form and may hinder their hopes of European progress. The good news is that they do have options when it comes to rotation and on the surface, it feels they have a bit more attacking and midfield quality than their opponents here. Betis look capable of taking a 1st Leg advantage if they can dig deep and find some fresh energy reserves here.
