Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Preview

Real Madrid and Real Sociedad meet in one of the standout fixtures this weekend in LaLiga. Los Blancos will have one eye on Wednesday’s Champions League clash with PSG but they aren’t expected to rotate heavily against a competitive Real Sociedad side that is hoping to bolster their own European ambitions.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are sitting pretty on top of LaLiga but this title race is far from over with Sevilla’s derby win last weekend ensuring the gap remains at 6 points heading into this matchday. Real Madrid do though look as though they are going to be very tough to stop in LaLiga and they are in reasonably good form overall with 14 points from their last 6 league outings.

They’ve been made to sweat at times but you always know that they have players capable of producing a moment of real quality to settle tight games. That was certainly the case last weekend when they were frustrated for over 80 minutes by Rayo Vallecano before brilliant link-up play between Vinicius and Karim Benzema carved open the home defence and sealed a 1-0 win for Los Blancos.

They are hampered by the expected absence of Toni Kroos here which will be a boost for Real Sociedad who are hoping to find some form again following a disappointing few months which culminated in a Europa League exit against RB Leipzig. They have won their last two in LaLiga though and the focus now for Imanol will be finishing strongly as they bid to secure European qualification for the third season running.

Playing just one game most weeks between now and May should help them in that pursuit. Despite only scoring 27 goals this term, fewer than bottom club Levante, La Real still have a shot at a top four finish. They are 6th heading into this matchday, but only 2 points off 3rd placed Betis after Real Sociedad won 2-0 in their game in hand in midweek against Mallorca. There was a rare goal for David Silva in that game and they’ll need the former Spain and Manchester City legend to produce some of his best football between now and the end of the season as he hasn’t really served up too much of that during his time in Donostia.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Real Madrid Wins, 1 Real Sociedad Win, 2 Draws.
  • Real Madrid won 2-0 in San Sebastian in December in the reverse fixture.
  • However they’ve only won 1 of their last 4 home games vs La Real.
  • Real Sociedad were memorable 4-3 victors here in a Copa del Rey tie in February 2020.

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-1 Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad have been more convincing in LaLiga of late with just 1 defeat in their last 8 games suggesting they are starting to find a bit of form again. They’ve avoided defeat in 3 of their last 4 trips to play Real Madrid in the capital too and the visitors may just be able to grab a point here with Carlo Ancelotti’s side having one eye on that crunch clash with PSG this coming week and most likely missing the influential Toni Kroos here too.
