Two of European football’s most prestigious managers of the past decade go head to head this weekend as Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis take on Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. Both teams will be looking to gather all three points in the fight for the top four, especially considering the recent form of Barcelona and Villarreal.

Los Verdiblancos enter this tie in fine goalscoring form, scoring eleven goals in their past five LaLiga games. Sergio Canales and attacking full back Alex Moreno have been at their best in recent months, with the ever-brilliant Nabil Fekir showing off his silky skills whilst pulling strings in midfield and offering attacking prowess as well. This has been one of the best seasons in recent history for Betis, with the Seville club having realistic chances to win the Europa League and Copa Del Rey as well as competing for a top four spot in the league.

Unfortunately for Pellegrini’s side, they suffered a derby defeat last time out in LaLiga away at Sevilla. Although they were pulled apart in the first half, huge chances missed by Alex Moreno and Marc Barta proved vital as Betis ended up only losing by a single goal. They were back in action on Thursday, with substitute Borja Iglesias bundling the ball home from close range in Stoppage Time to dramatically seal progress into the Copa del Rey Final after a nervy night against Rayo Vallecano who briefly threatened to mount a 2nd Leg comeback.

Beits face one of their direct rivals for a top four finish here. After winning the title last season and with the return to the club of Antoine Griezmann, no one could have foreseen Atletico suffering such a drop off this term. Four losses in a row in December hit Los Rojiblancos hard and in un-Simeone fashion, the club have been conceding goals for fun as of late, keeping only two clean sheets in their last ten games. A lengthy injury list hasn’t helped El Cholo, with Griezmann, Felipe, Mario Hermsoso, captain Koke and more being unavailable for matchday squads in the past months.

Despite a disappointing season, Atletico have been able to crawl back in recent weeks, with a convincing performance against Manchester United in the Champions League sandwiched in between wins against Osasuna and Celta Vigo in LaLiga. Full back Renan Lodi showed his quality in the latter two of those games and the past months have shown that forward Angel Correa is underrated in terms of what he can offer Simeone’s side at the top end of the pitch.

Possible Lineups

Real Betis vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Betis 1-2 Atletico Madrid

This tie is near impossible to call, with both sides hitting form in recent weeks and both fighting for the same objective. Fitness could be the difference between the two sides, with Betis playing one of the most important games in their recent history against Rayo in the Copa del Rey semi-final on Thursday night. Atleti may be a bit fresher and that could tilt this in their favour.
