Two sides who couldn’t be closer in the table face off this weekend, with fourteenth place Espanyol taking on fifteenth place Getafe at the RCDE Stadium. Both sides will be looking to move themselves further clear of the relegation scrap beneath them.

Espanyol enter this match after failing to secure three points in any of their last seven matches in LaLiga, with their last win coming on 31st December against Valencia. In their last outing, they were demolished by five goals to one at the hands of Villarreal in which the parakeets were extremely underwhelming after picking up draws against top four sides Sevilla and city rivals Barcelona in their two previous matches. 

After a shock relegation in the 2019-20 season, it was unexpected that Espanyol would suffer the same fate this time round on their return to Spain’s top flight. Outside of the top six, only two clubs have netted more goals this season than Espanyol, however Vicente Moreno’s side has not shown the same consistency at the back as they are one of the top teams in the league in terms of goals conceded. 

This matchup will bring together two of LaLiga’s most in-form strikers, Raul De Tomas and Enes Unal. Both players have thirteen goals in LaLiga this campaign and are level as the division’s joint second top scorers along with Real Madrid youngster Vinicius Jr. 

Unal scored twice in the reverse fixture on 31st October last year, which brought Getafe their first win of the season. At the time, Quique Sanchez Flores’ side seemed doomed, but achieving 21 points since then has sprung the Madrilenos back into a mid-table spot. Although not being quite as strict defensively as they were in previous campaigns under Jose Bordalas, the team has kept eight clean sheets in LaLiga since Flores returned for his third spell at the club. 

Getafe’s last result was a 2-2 draw at home to Alaves last weekend, a game in which they did not play at their best but certainly did enough to win the match.
