Elche vs Barcelona Preview

Barcelona’s revival under Xavi is going from strength to strength and they’ll be favourites to pick up another win this weekend when they travel to Elche. The Catalan giants have been scoring for fun of late but they won’t expect to have it all their own way here.

Elche have been really strong at home this season, winning 5 and losing only 2 of their 12 outings in LaLiga at the Estadio Martinez Valero. Indeed they’ve won all of their last 3 at home to put distance between themselves and the bottom 3. Crucially their forwards have started to put chances away with Guido Carrillo and Ezequiel Ponce both on target against Rayo a fortnight ago while Pere Milla ranks as one of the best finishers in LaLiga this season.

It’s safe to say Elche had a real off day last time out though. Having lost just 1 of their previous 7 league games, they went to bottom club Levante and crashed to a heavy 3-0 defeat. The scoreline perhaps flattered the Valencia side a bit but Elche boss Francisco would have had some stern words to say for his team after that you’d imagine and he’ll be hoping for a reaction here.

If Barcelona can reproduce some of the football they’ve played in recent weeks, it might not matter too much what Elche side turns up here. Xavi’s men have looked far more convincing of late and come into this game having scored four goals in each of their last three matches. That includes a 4-1 win at Valencia prior to the 4-0 demolition of Athletic last time out, either side of an all important Europa League success in Naples.

Just about everything seems to be going right for Barca all of a sudden and even Ousmane Dembele has been successfully reintegrated into the fold. The Frenchman was at his dazzling best as he came off the bench to impress against Athletic and he’ll be hoping to dislodge Adama Traore from the XI here. Indeed Xavi suddenly has some real selection headaches with the likes of Memphis, Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia also only on the bench last time out and eager for minutes.

Elche vs Barcelona Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 1-3 Barcelona

Elche do have a strong home record but on current form, Barcelona are playing well enough to come here and win the game. They have so many options in attacking areas now that they can really use the bench to their advantage and kill teams off late on as was the case against Athletic last weekend.
