Villarreal vs Espanyol Preview
Sunday’s action in LaLiga kicks off at the Ceramica where Espanyol are paying Villarreal a visit. The hosts are fresh from a huge Champions League night against Juventus and will need to focus their minds on the task as they seek to put 3 points on the board.
Villarreal are a curious team in many respects. They certainly look at home on the Champions League stage and responded well to going behind in the first minute against Juve with Dani Parejo ghosting in to secure a 1-1 draw in the 1st Leg of their last 16 tie. At times you watch them and think they should be doing much better than 6th place in what isn’t the strongest LaLiga we’ve ever seen.
10 points from their last 4 league games does suggest they are very much on the right track though and even the injury absence of Gerard Moreno has not hit them as hard as might have been expected. That’s in part thanks to Arnaut Danjuma who stepped up and netted a hat-trick in their impressive 4-1 win at Granada last weekend. They’ll be looking to the Dutchman for inspiration here too as they bid to close in on the top four with another victory.
Espanyol meanwhile are doing what they normally did before the shock of relegation, in that they’re drifting towards a mid-table finish. To an extent, that has to be seen as a relatively good season in their first year back in the top flight. It certainly gives them something to build from but even as they remain winless in 2022, there have been games where you think this is a team capable of more.
Their last two games have been good examples. They could and perhaps should have beaten both Barcelona and Sevilla with strong all-round displays at the RCDE Stadium but had to settle for a point in both cases. They will be hungry to finally get that first win of 2022 but it shouldn’t be too long before it comes with Sergi Darder impressing in midfield while Raul De Tomas always offers a goal threat up top.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Villarreal Win, 2 Espanyol Wins, 3 Draws.
- The sides drew 0-0 at the RCDE Stadium earlier this term.
- Villarreal haven’t won any of their last 4 home games against Espanyol.
- Their last win over this opposition at the Ceramica was via a 2-0 margin in 2017.
Gerard Moreno, Paco Alcacer, Francis Coquelin and Rubén Peña are missing for the home team.
Aleix Vidal, Manu Morlanes and David Lopez are absent for the visitors.
Villarreal vs Espanyol Predictions
Score Prediction: Villarreal 2-2 Espanyol
Villarreal are one of those sides that just when they appear to be building some momentum, often draw games they should be winning, and on the back of their UCL exertions, a repeat seems very possible here. Espanyol have some good players and at times manage to exert a real control on games that you don’t expect to see from newly promoted sides. They may have enough to get a result here.
