Granada vs Cadiz Preview
A huge clash at the bottom of Spain’s first division takes place at the Nuevo Los Carmenes this weekend, with Granada and Cadiz facing off this Monday evening. With Granada sitting in seventeenth place, only four points ahead of their opponents in eighteenth, three points for the home side here could allow Granada to pull away from the chasing pack however a win for Cadiz would give them a huge boost in the fight for survival.
Coming into this season, it was expected that Granada would struggle to reach the heights of previous campaigns after former manager Diego Martinez left the club. The Andalusians got off to a rough start to the campaign after achieving only three points from a possible twenty-one and had to wait until Matchday eight for their first win of the season.
Robert Moreno’s side were able to claw their way back, earning ten points in December alone, however five losses in their last five matches have brought Granada into a relegation fight once more. On the last matchday, they remained competitive for long stretches against Villarreal, however lazy defending cost the Andalusians who ended up losing the match by three goals.
Their opposition for this match have also failed to reach the heights of previous seasons this campaign, after finishing twelfth last time out. In their most recent match at home against Getafe, Alvaro Negredo’s strike on the stroke of half time secured a point for the southern club.
In early January, Cadiz were forced to dismiss Diego Cervera after over five years at the club as the team sat in the relegation zone. The club enter most matches with their focus being on the defensive side of the game, and this has shown as goals have been hard to come by with the club only scoring 21 goals in 25 games. The pirates have picked up six points since appointing Sergio Gonzalez and will look to take all three points against a fellow relegation candidate here.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Granada Win, 1 Cadiz Win, 4 Draws.
- Cadiz are unbeaten in 5 games against Granada.
- They won 1-0 on this ground last season, the only top flight meeting in Granada this century.
- The sides drew 1-1 in Cadiz earlier this term.
Neyder Lozano and Santi Arias should remain out of this fixture for Granada as they both recover from injuries.
As for Cadiz, central defender Fali should start however he may be substituted in the second half as he was against Getafe as he has recently recovered from injury. Alfonso Espino is suspended.
Granada vs Cadiz Predictions
Score Prediction: Granada 1-1 Cadiz
With so much on the line, both of these sides could enter this match with a conservative approach which may not be easy on the eye. Both Granada and Cadiz must start picking up points in order to avoid the drop, and this fixture could prove crucial come the end of the season.
