Getafe vs Alaves Preview
We are creeping ever closer to the business end of the season and these kinds of bottom six showdowns become all the more important in the battle for survival. Getafe have shown much more than Alaves over the winter months and look more capable of pulling clear but they are not out of trouble yet and an away win would really suck them back into the thick of the scrap.
Getafe are 6 points above the bottom three heading into the weekend. They’ve been playing more like a top half side in recent months with Quique Sanchez-Flores having done a wonderful job since he came in. Their home form has been pivotal to that with 6 wins and a draw from their last 7 outings at the Coliseum.
That should give them all the confidence in the world going into this game and things are working at both ends. They’ve kept clean sheets in 5 of their last 6 home outings, even shutting out leaders Real Madrid in a 1-0 derby victory. They’ll be confident of a repeat here in a game which may be billed as a battle between two strikers.
Enes Unal is Getafe’s top scorer with 11 league goals this term, by far his best return in LaLiga and 8 more than any of his teammates have managed. Alaves’ Joselu has gone one better with 12 goals, although he’s had precious little support from elsewhere with no other Alaves player having netted more than 2. Indeed Joselu’s tally represents a huge 63% of his team’s total with Alaves the lowest scorers in LaLiga overall.
They’ve also got the joint worst away record and recently appointed boss José Luis Mendilibar hasn’t exactly found any solutions so far. Alaves’ last 4 away games in LaLiga have seen them concede 15 goals, scoring just 3 themselves in a series of heavy defeats. They did at least manage to get their first win under the former Eibar boss in their most recent home game, a 2-1 success against Valencia, but they are 4 points from safety heading into this weekend and in big trouble.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Getafe Win, 5 Draws.
- All of the last 5 meetings have been drawn.
- The sides drew 1-1 in Vitoria earlier this term.
- The previous 3 meetings had all ended 0-0.
Mathías Olivera and Carlos Alena are injury doubts for the hosts.
Alaves should be at full strength for this one.
Getafe vs Alaves Predictions
Score Prediction: Getafe 2-0 Alaves
With Getafe in terrific home form and Alaves very poor away, it feels like there’s only one winner here. Alaves desperately need to find fresh solutions at both ends of the pitch but it’s hard to see how they get a result against a confident and much improved Getafe side.
