Barcelona vs Athletic Club Preview

Camp Nou empty

The late game on Sunday in LaLiga comes from Camp Nou where Barcelona take on Athletic Club in a clash between two of Spanish football’s iconic clubs. They are very familiar foes in recent years and this isn’t even the first meeting of 2022 with Athletic having won an entertaining Copa del Rey clash between the sides a few weeks back.

Barcelona have improved since then though. Bolstered by several January additions, there is now a real sense that something is building at Camp Nou once more and some of their recent displays have showcased more of the free-flowing football that Barça fans expect to see from their side. They’ve certainly been on the goal trail of late and come into this game following a 4-1 league win at Valencia followed by a 4-2 Europa League win at Napoli.

The latter ensured they progressed into the last 16 and a winnable tie with Galatasaray. Xavi’s side now look like the favourites to win that competition while they are also well placed to finish in the top four in LaLiga so fears they may miss out on the Champions League and the significant financial boost that brings, have eased. They do still have plenty of work to do though and can’t afford to take their foot off the gas here against an Athletic side that is tough to beat.

Marcelino’s men have only suffered two away league defeats all season and even those came in close games where Athletic probably should have got results. They come into this game following a thumping 4-0 win in the Basque Derby with Real Sociedad last weekend, their fourth win in the space of six matches in LaLiga.

Those victories, and particularly the one against fellow hopefuls La Real, have pushed them right back into the European picture again. They do of course have another potential path into Europe though. The 2nd Leg of their Copa del Rey Semi-Final against Valencia is this coming week. With the tie in the balance at 1-1, Marcelino may consider rotating his team a bit here to keep some key players fresh for that game.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Barcelona Wins, 2 Athletic Wins, 1 Draw.
  • The clubs have met 6 times since the start of 2021.
  • Athletic were 3-2 winners in the Copa del Rey in January and also won a Supercopa meeting between the clubs last term.
  • However Barcelona are unbeaten in 4 league meetings, winning 4 of the last 5 at Camp Nou.

Team News

Jordi Alba is banned for Barcelona. Clement Lenglet and Memphis Depay are fit again and could play some part, although perhaps not from the start.

Alex Berenguer is banned for the visitors. Nico Williams is out injured.

Barcelona vs Athletic Club Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-0 Athletic Club

Barcelona are full of confidence and playing good football again and they look very likely winners here, particularly given Athletic have the distraction of a cup semi-final this coming week. With more depth to the squad now, the Catalans should also be able to cope with the demands of a busy schedule better and they ought to be able to rotate a bit, but still win here.
