Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo Preview
Celta Vigo travel to the Wanda Metropolitano this weekend, hoping to become the latest side to upset Atletico Madrid this season. Diego Simeone’s side are fresh from a couple of improved displays though and will be hoping to finally start building a bit of momentum with a good showing here.
Atleti will feel as though they should have won their Champions League game against Manchester United in midweek. Aside from Joao Felix’s goal, they also rattled the woodwork and largely bossed the game against the English side who would ultimately claim a 1-1 draw thanks to Anthony Elanga’s late leveller.
That came on the back of a 3-0 win at Osasuna with Felix impressing in that game too and while we’ve said it before, you wonder if this could be the start of something for the Portuguese youngster who has been underwhelming since his big money move. The club is certainly going to have some big decisions to make in the summer with the future of Antoine Griezmann also uncertain. Their ability to do things in the transfer market will of course largely be influenced by their ability to finish in the top four, which remains uncertain as we head into the final few months of the campaign.
Celta will be hoping to push for one of the final European places meanwhile. They are currently 7 points off 6th and 6 points off 7th which may be good enough for Conference League football depending on the identity of the Copa del Rey winner. The Galicians have only lost 1 of their last 9 league games and have clearly found their feet again after a poor start to the season.
They may feel as though they’ve missed a good opportunity to get even closer to the European positions. They missed a late penalty that would have won their latest away game, a goalless draw at Cadiz. They then conceded an 82nd minute goal to only draw at home to bottom club Levante last time out. They can though take confidence into this match thanks to good away results against top four sides since the turn of the year at Sevilla and Betis.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Atletico Madrid Wins, 3 Draws.
- Atleti won 2-1 in Vigo earlier in the season.
- Celta haven’t defeated the Madrid club since a 2-0 win in September 2018.
- The last 2 meetings at the Wanda Metropolitno have both ended in draws.
Koke, Daniel Wass and Matheus Cunha are out for the home team.
Celta Vigo should have a fully fit squad here.
Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo Predictions
Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Celta Vigo
Atletico Madrid have started to look a little bit more convincing in recent games and they really do need to find some consistency now. Celta Vigo will serve up a real test but over 90 minutes, you fancy the hosts may just have enough to find the victory.
