Real Madrid vs Alaves Preview

Real Madrid are back in domestic action this weekend after a challenging evening in Paris in midweek. Alaves are the visitors to the Santiago Bernabeu and three points is very much the expectation for Los Blancos.

As has been the case in recent seasons, we’ve often wondered about the relative strength of sides at the top of LaLiga when compared to the best on the continent. As comfortable as they’ve been in setting the pace in Spain this term, we got another indication that the Spanish elite are not currently part of the European elite in midweek with Real Madrid second best in the French capital against PSG. While it’s true that talisman Karim Benzema was not fully fit and while it did take the Ligue 1 leaders until Stoppage Time to finally break through, Real Madrid were second best for much of the game and will need much better to stand a chance of progress in the 2nd Leg.

In truth, Real Madrid’s title chances will increase even more should they exit against PSG. They hold a 4 point advantage on a Sevilla side which is likely to go deep in the Europa League and should the league end up being the only focus for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, it’s hard to see them not finishing the job, although dropped points in 4 of their last 7 league games, suggests they are going through a bit of a rough patch.

Alaves come into this game on the back of a vital win last time out. Their situation was starting to look very bleak when they lost 3-1 at relegation rivals Elche on matchday 23, their 3rd straight league loss. However there is finally some optimism again with a long awaited victory coming in the shape of a 2-1 triumph over Valencia.

It was no great surprise to see Joselu score the winner. He will be key to their chances of beating the drop but their inability to score goals from other areas is a major concern. Alaves have the worst goalscoring tally in the league with just 19 scored this season and that’s pretty extraordinary when you consider only two players in the division can better Joselu’s return of 12.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Real Madrid Wins, 1 Alaves Win.
  • Real Madrid have won the last two meetings 4-1, with both games in Vitoria.
  • However the most recent clash in Madrid produced a shock 2-1 win for Alaves in November 2020.
  • Los Blancos have won 14 of the last 16 meetings overall.

Team News

Karim Benzema may drop to the bench having not really looked fit in Paris. Gareth Bale is in contention for another start for Los Blancos who have no other major selection issues.

Victor Laguardia is suspended for Alaves. Ximo Navarro is expected to be missing through injury.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-0 Alaves

Whether it’s a lack of rotation catching up on them, or other factors, it’s clear that Real Madrid aren’t quite firing right now. Karim Benzema was rushed back to play in Paris but it’s not clear whether or not he will start here and there is a risk this will be another sub-par display from Los Blancos. That being said, a shot-shy Alaves side are unlikely to make them pay.
