Atletico Madrid travel to Pamplona this weekend to take on an Osasuna side who are on the end of a mixed run of results in Spain’s top division. Jagoba Arrasate’s side are safe of relegation, however a European place looks a stretch at this point in the season, whilst Atletico will look to take three points in order to stay in the hunt for a top four spot and a convincing performance here would boost their confidence for next week’s Champions League tie against Manchester United. In the reverse fixture earlier this season, both teams displayed strong performances with Atletico taking a slender 1-0 win thanks to a late goal from Felipe.

Osasuna are enjoying a very good season by their standards. Although they have not been able to form any real stretches of consistency, gathering points against sides at both ends of the table has allowed the northerners to take each match game by game without the pressure of being in a relegation fight.

The form of centre half David Garcia and Sergio Herrera between the sticks has given Osasuna a strong defensive base. The duo have been major factors in the Pamplona side’s ability to keep ten clean sheets in LaLiga this season.

On the other hand, Atletico seem to have struggled to cope with the pressure of coming into this season as defending champions. Many believed this season to be a great opportunity for Los Colchoneros to retain the title for only the third time in their history, but rather it seems a top four finish and a run in the Champions League is the best Diego Simeone’s side can hope for.

Injuries to star forwards and Luis Suarez’s inability to keep up his form from the previous campaign have cost Atletico, however surprisingly, it is actually defensive frailty which has been their main issue. Los Rojiblancos have conceded 34 goals in LaLiga this season by matchday 24, which is more than what they had conceded in the entirety of all of Simeone’s nine previous seasons at the club.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 6 Atletico Madrid Wins.
  • Atleti have won on 5 of their last 6 trips to El Sadar.
  • The exception was a 3-0 defeat in February 2014.
  • Diego Simeone’s side won 1-0 when the sides met in Madrid earlier this term.

Team News

Kike Barja, Jesus Areso and Aridane Hernandez remain out for Osasuna while Kike Garcia will hope his goal as a substitute last time out will earn him a place in the starting eleven.

Daniel Wass and Antoine Griezmann are still out for Simeone’s side, whilst a positive Covid-19 test should keep Yannick Carrisco out of contention. In midweek, Matheus Cunha suffered a knee injury during a training session which will not only keep him out of this match, but may even keep him out until the latter stages of the season. Felipe could return to the Atletico line-up after serving a suspension against Levante in midweek. Rodrigo de Paul is banned.

Possible Lineups

Osasuna vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Osasuna 2-1 Atletico Madrid

With Atletico being in a poor run of form and suffering from many key injuries, it would not be a surprise if the home side pick up all three points, especially considering they have taken points from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla already this campaign.
