Celta Vigo vs Levante Preview
The Monday night game this week in LaLiga comes from Balaidos where rock bottom Levante are the visitors. They are hoping to build on a shock win at the Wanda Metropolitano last week but Celta will be hungry to make them pay as they bid to bolster their own European ambitions.
Celta certainly need to be winning these kinds of games if they want to be back on the European stage in 2022/23. Their recent form suggests they are capable of making a push for a top seven finish with 4 wins and just 1 defeat from their last 7 games. They will though be rueing a missing opportunity with Santi Mina’s late penalty miss denying them 3 points at Cadiz last weekend.
The Galcians have one of the most settled sides in the league which brings both advantages and disadvantages. Despite some suggestions they had been figured out earlier in the campaign, Chacho Coudet has largely stuck with his preferred 4-1-3-2 system with some slight tweaks here and there. It has started to yield better results with Fran Beltran and Franco Cervi jumping into the usual starting XI ahead of Renato Tapia and Nolito.
Despite winning 1-0 at Atletico Madrid against all odds on Wednesday night for just their second league win of the season, Levante still look pretty much doomed to the drop with 10 points separating them from safety heading into this matchday. That’s a lot of points to make up but they could just prove dangerous opponents for many teams if they can free themselves of the pressures of their previous struggles and take a “nothing to lose” approach to the rest of the campaign.
Gonzalo Melero’s winner in Madrid certainly gives them something to build from and they may adopt a similar approach here after their 5-3-2 system delivered a much more solid defensive display. Alessio Lisci made some big calls by leaving out Jose Luis Morales and Dani Gomez who had scored twice in the previous match against Betis. There may be some temptation to just name the same side again or something very close to it given they’d lost 6 of their 7 matches prior to the Atleti game.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Celta Wins, 3 Levante Wins, 1 Draw.
- Celta have won the last 2 meetings 2-0.
- They’ve won 4 of the last 6 at Balaidos.
- However Levante have won here in 2019 and 2020 by 4-1 and 3-2 margins respectively.
Celta should have a fully fit squad to choose from here.
Levante still have significant selection problems with Ruben Vezo, Nemanja Radoja, Sergio Postigo and Jose Campaña out injured.
Celta Vigo vs Levante Predictions
Score Prediction: Celta Vigo 2-1 Levante
Levante showed plenty of heart and a much more assured display last time out and could be trickier opponents for Celta here than they might have been expecting. Even so, Celta have to be the clear favourites and with no major selection worries, look capable of making it 4 straight home league wins here.
