Sevilla vs Dinamo Zagreb Preview
On paper, Sevilla have the most favourable tie of the four Spanish teams in Europa League action this week. They are paired with Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb and will fancy their chances of progress as they seek to move a step closer to another Final in the competition that has come to define them, this time with the added incentive of playing it in their own stadium.
Julen Lopetegui does have something of a balancing act to play though. Sevilla are 2nd in LaLiga, just 4 points off leaders Real Madrid and have their best chance at competing for a league title in many years. Given the amount of times they have won this competition, many Sevilla fans would gladly sacrifice another Europa League triumph, in favour of domestic glory, even when considering the location of the Final.
Sevilla are in this competition as a result of a disappointing Champions League campaign which culminated in a really poor 1-0 loss in Salzburg. They were not in a particularly tough group so that exit did raise many questions about the strength of this side but they’ve responded to that blow in a positive fashion and haven’t lost a single league game since that defeat in Austria.
They can’t afford to take this tie for granted though. Dinamo Zagreb progressed into the Quarter-Finals of last season’s Europa League, memorably seeing off Tottenham 3-0 in the 2nd Leg of their last 16 tie thanks to a hat-trick from Mislav Oršić. They beat Premier League opposition again in the group stage of this year’s competition, with a 1-0 win at West Ham on MD6 seeing them through in 2nd place in their group.
Dinamo Zagreb have won every game they’ve played since that victory at London Stadium in December so confidence shouldn’t exactly be an issue coming into this game. However an away trip to Sevilla is about as tough as it gets in this competition and they will most likely be aiming to ensure they are still in the tie heading into next week’s 2nd Leg in Croatia.
